when i open any evo file type thing in resedit, i get a buncha hexadecimal stuff......
and i can't open the one (under the opil) with my ships name in the pilot file to rename
it.....

One: In order to get something other than illegible hexadecimal, you need the EV ResEdit Templates. These should come bundled with the EV Bible. You use the templates by having a file that includes them open in ResEdit at the same time as the file you are editing. This is really easy if you copy all the templates into the file you want to edit.
Two: In order to change the name of the ship, select the thing with the ship name and then get info on it (command-I). Then change the ship name.

There are no opil templates. to change ship name, open pilot file in resedit, open opil resource, click once on the item containing name of ship, resource menu:get resource info, change name to whatever you want
