If they speak with a New York accent, write with a New York accent. If they speak like a redneck, write like a redneck. Also, you don't use perfect grammar in normal speech. Like this. You see, that was a fragment. It didn't contain a complete idea, which is why I wrote it like I did: it broke the flow of the paragraph enough to keep my writing from lulling you off to sleep (which I am undoubtedly doing right now). It attracted your attention. Play with your grammar and your spelling. Non-technically (as this topic is supposed to be), _ write like your character talks._ Write in plain English. If he or she is a scholar, use big words and perfect grammar. If they've lived out on the street all their life, use slang words and phrases, and bad grammar. It helps to give your character personality.

It is, however, quite annoying to come across a plugin where the military officers talk with today's slang. When you walk down the concourse, the general salutes you with a huge "Wazzzzzzzup!" This really put me off, and I disliked the plugin. Don't overuse slang. I think the plug was called "Reign of the UE," but I could be wrong.

Yes, it's rather strange when a plugin based in 3180 or later uses current slang... Don't be afraid to make up your own, or steal it from other works. The more obscure the book you take it from, the better. But remember to give the author credit in some kind of a references or inspirations page in the readme.

I don't think any admiral (or general, for that manner) said "Wazzzzzzzup!" in Reign of the UE" (there may have been some sland. I might check, but I'll probably be working on a an EVN plugin soon.) Someone may have said "What's up," but not the (in?)famous variation of that phrase popularized by Budwiser.

      God bless,
