    • Looking for a good computer animation college...

Any of you graphics d00ds know of a good liberal arts college where I can major in 3D computer animation? yeah. and stuff. Web sites would be helpful.

    • I'm looking for one also, preferably with an Army ROTC program.

I've looked at the art institutes, I think (url="http://"http://www.artinstitutes.edu/")www.artinstitutes.edu/(/url) will get you there, though they don't have Army ROTC so I'm not very interested at this point.

I also got a peice of advice from the Big Idea website. To sum it up: find a college that teaches you the theory & history of animation, not just the latest tools. Check it out here: (url="http://"http://www.bigidea.com/company/qanda/company/careers/career_advice.htm")http://www.bigidea.c...reer_advice.htm(/url)
Big Idea makes VeggieTales, by the way.

    • One of the art institutes told me the stuff on my web site is equivalent to a second-year student's work. I think i want something a little more challenging.

Interesting combo, 3D graphics and Reserve Officer's Training. 🙂

    • Texas A&M; has the best ROTC going, and has a very good program for computer arts (actually, there is even a 3D design major in the College of Architecture at A&M;).
      So if that intrests you...

Really? How'd you find out? I wonder what they'd think of my stuff...

Oh, and it seems your website has a ton of broken links. I can't access lots of stuff, like the studio section.

I've found that a great deal of 3D knowledge and experience can be gained from independent work. School can be good for teaching things like traditional art or cinematography and other fields related to CG, but until you reach a very high level of proficiency, you can learn on your own as far as using programs goes.

I for one am going to Stanford next year (anyone else?), and I'm going to keep doing what I have been doing: school for academics, spare time for CG and having fun, except that now for once I'll be able to have some classes related to CG. 🙂

Of course, being in California, you're going to also have access to programs such as tho ones at Cogswell Polytechnical in Sunnyvale, the Academy of Art College in San Fransisco, West Valley College in Saratoga, and De Anza College in Cupertino. I know, you're laughing at the mention of community colleges, but they have very good programs. Besides, I heard that the Academy of Art College isn't all that great for CG, despite the fact that they have tons of equipment, and that Cogswell is a better place to go for such things. Anyway, it depends on what you want to do in CG. If you want to be an animator, De Anza is a very good place to go, and they have produced several great character animators (but then again, I'm a tad biased). If you want to do effects animation, probably Cogswell or the Academy would be better. Lighting, staging, modeling are among the other fields of CG animation that you might want to focus on, since animation is a very tough field to get into.

I talked to a representative at the art institute of philadelphia and gave him my URL.

Yeah, I know most of the pages are down. I haven't had time to make them or put them up. I really haven't had time for anything... 😛 having a job and a girlfriend can do that to ya.

    • Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll look them up.

Divals, are you sure the rep didn't evaluate it from a web design degree standpoint & not 3D modelling &/or animation?

I'm suprised the expectations of that art institute are so low.

Well, that's why I want to find a good college, isn't it? I don't even have any MANUALS for my programs!

How is that, apparently they've had graduates hired by just about everybody in the business?

Teach it to yourself. Nobody should have to read any manuals, just try it out. 🙂

You don't HAVE to read the manuals, but your learning curve will be much higher than if you go to school. For instance, I could probably have figured out SoftImage to the point I am now (IK/FK animating, animating in layers, Constraint animation) if I spent several hours a day for several months, but that would also include lots of frustration and failures. In a classroom situation, the learning curve is much faster, and while failures will occur, at least there's someone there who knows what he/she's doing.

But it's a lot more satisfying to achieve that on your own, plus the gained knowledge and abilities will be more permanent if you have to try a few times to get something instead of simply reproducing the same thing described on the board.

Not necessarily. In my class, my prof would teach us a technique or something, and then assign a project using that technique. And believe me, when you have to do something like making a character jump across a screen, there are plenty of tries and retries to make the technique stick. Also, most of the projects required techniques from the previous projects, so it wasn't simply reproducing work.

Why not? did you pirate or something? because unless the program is shareware...it should come with a manual.

I would suggest going to a bookstore, or amazon, or something and finding some tutorials.
Thats what I do. I have like 3 books that ive eaten lately.

one more thing: Practice makes perfect.
