    • Quicktime movies

I've created a few Quicktime animations in Infini-D and they work fine off my computer, but the fail to even show up in Internet Explorer. Someone told me that any QT movie can be viewed in Explorer, but all I get is a picture of a broken QT logo. Am I missing something?

Any help is appreciated. Live long and prosper.

You could check that the QuickTime plug-in is installed properly (depending on the various versions), but I've never found that it pays to view movies in a web browser; you're much better to either download them then view them, or use the QuickTime Player's 'Open URL' command.

Basically, I just want to get my QT movies to work in Internet Explorer so the folks in the Image Gallery can check them out (without having to download them). But maybe it is a problem with my preferences... I'll look into that.

    • I tried the "Open URL" feature, but QT gave me an error saying it was a "file that could not be recognized." I'm wondering if since Infini-D is an older program (and thus saves QT movies in an older format) that newer versions of QuickTime cannot open them. If that is the case, is there any way I can save my QT files in a newer .mov format?

But then again, QT has no problem opening the files if they're just sitting on my hard drive... weird. When Infini-D makes a QT movie, it never adds the .mov to the end of the name, and thus I add it myself. Could this also be part of the problem?

    • In that case, it sounds like Infini-D is creating non-"flattened" movies, which rely on the Macintosh resource fork, which is of course lost when you send it through the Internet. You could try opening the movies up in your QuickTime player, choosing 'Save As', and checking the box to make the movies playable on non-Apple computers, or using the 'Export' command with the Internet preparation options turned on.

You must have QT Pro... my copy of QuickTime (version 5) will not allow me to export or "save as."

QT pro is the best $30 bucks you can spend.

or you can use the movie player from QT2.5 which came on way older computers <8.1 and came with pro. All the Qt 5 features are there as long as you have QT5 installed.

Only way I know to get 2.5 is from an old Macintosh. You should see, however, whether there's any way to get replacement serial numbers from Apple in the style of Ambrosia's lostcodes email.

I'm not sure if Apple has that kind of policy or not. But until I get a functional copy of QT Pro, I suppose I'll just have stick with letting viewers download the movies.

      Cute!

I'd like to see longer...but a smaller format, so the DL doesn't get too huge.

I'd like to see longer movies as well, but I crammed thirty frames into each second... that took about three hours to render. Cutting down on window size will probably speed things up.

    • Pretty cool.

One little bug that I noticed is that one of the laser blasts stops so that one pixel is still visible.

You can cut down your render time by illuminating your scene with spotlights, as opposed to point lights. It cuts down the number of rays in the scene that the computer has to calculate.

30 fps is good for TV, but a little steep for CD-ROM or internet. In fact, it will (and yours did) stutter on older hardware. I'd not go higher than 24, myself. I've even had acceptable results at 12 fps -- and that's half the size and half the render time.
