    • Problems with the char resource


      Namely, I can't make it work. I wanted to utilitize it for Nova Legacy: The Roughnecks , but I've had no luck so far. What I've been trying to do is create a new char named "Federation Recruit," which starts the player off in a Federation fightercraft in one of the outpost systems, opens with scrolling intro text instead of the pictures, and sets a mission bit or two to set up the storyline I'm doing.

      Nova simply will not recgonize it. I created it with resource ID 129 so it wouldn't conflict with the "trader" char. It didn't show up. I tried changing the "principal character" from trader to Federation Recruit. Nothing. I finally tried replacing the trader char with mine altogether. Still no response. Every time my char doesn't show up, and every time the debug log says "trader" is the primary char or whatever, even when I tried replacing it.

      I am registered and have done small, insignificant plugs to modify this and that for myself, and those work fine. I know that plugs can work for me. I've reached my whit's end; I don't know what to do.

      With this particular plug I can get around this, but the inability to use the char resource will effectively ruin what I had in mind for future projects, and I do prefer to use the resource for this plug if I can. Whatever help anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.

    • Interesting... I've created a small chär resource to jump-start me, and it works, but the ID is 128! Both of them appear. Try creating a blank plug with just a chär resource with ID 128 that only changes starting money and ship type.

    • I did some chär's and they worked right well. Showed up an everything.
      Do you have the "Default Chär" box checked? if so it might be conflicting.
      What did you name your chär? if it is working, you should see it in a little pop-up thingy right below the pilots name in "create new pilot".

      Did you try unchecking the box in chär 128? Perhaps that's the problem.

    • This might be something as trivial as you trying to load a plug with an unregistered Nova -- as plugins require a license. If this is not the case, my apologies.

      I've got a chär resource working quite happily. I have an ID 128 and an ID 129. The first is a modified "Trader" (the default one from Nova's data files), while the second is something utterly different. Both work, and setting those Default checkboxes in NovaTools only changes the default, like it's supposed to; it doesn't affect resource loading.

      The only funny thing I've encountered with Nova concerning the chär resources that I've run into so far is the fact that even though if I have only one chär resource in a plugin -- with the ID 128 so it replaces Nova's chär -- the pop-up menu is displayed, with only one menu item (the 128) in the menu. Silly, but a very minor annoyance.

    • Nichome: As I said in my first post, I am registered. If you would send me your working plug so I can look it over, that'd be great.

      Returning to the subject at hand, I'm puzzled more than ever now. I tried creating my char within Nova Data 1 and started up Nova. Sure enough, it was there.

      Then I remove it, put it in a plug (exactly the way it was!), and drop it in the plug-ins folder.....nothing.

      Clearly I am NOT doing anything wrong, but it won't recgonize it when my plug adds a new char! What really kills me is that I have done a small plug that Fed Destroyer and Carrier more accessible, and it WORKS.

      WHY in the world would one plug work, but not the other? If everyone else can create chars just fine, why can't I?

    • Can you put up a stuffed version of the plug so that people could take a look at it? That might get the problem solved faster.

      Put it into the Nova Plugs folder, creat a new pilot and you'll see em on the popup beside "Background".

      Upon reading this, I decided to do a little test of my own. I created a plug-in and I made different chars (one of them had you in a Fed Carrier - this is just for experimentation). I put it in, and it worked. The secret, I believe, is that I copied and pasted the "Trader" char into the plug. So my plug not only has the "trader" char from the original game, but the chars I made, too. Maybe that will do it. I do not know.

    • I guess this has something to do with the chär resourse. Is it possible to create a character who doesn't get hurt by/can't hurt a certain government's ships/weapons. (I posted this elsewhere but didn't get a diffinitive reply)

    • I am having exactly the same problems as UEC. It seems as though EVN is simply not patching over the data files' char 128 with mine. Initial systs, initial credits and intro screens remain exactly the same as in the standard Nova scenario. It's maddening - we may have to wait for a 1.0.1 update to fix this.

      Incidentally, I can't get button text colors in the colr resource to work either, although since at least some portions of the colr resource do get patched, the bug is probably unrelated.

    • Well, though I havent registered yet, I believe I have found you're problem. The govt fields correspond with the status fields, and you have status of 0 set for the govt fields with values of -1. If you have a -1 in the govt field, you'll need a -1 in the corresponding status field. Same with the Intro PICT and Delay fields.

    • Silly question, but did you make sure the Plugin has the correct type and creator codes? Nova won't load plugins that have incorrect codes set.

I don't know about you, but that was really bugging me, so yay!
