Taught myself grep last night to convert an EV Text (by Pontus Ilbring) export of EV's dëscs to a MishMash compatible format. Things stopped working when I got the the import part, though. The following missive has been sent to Dr. Ralph:

1.) Mish and Mash seem to use different syntaxes, strangely. The MishMashReadMe.txt file says that begin and end strings should be denoted with asterisks (*), but the test.txt file and files produced by Mish use bullets () instead.2.) Whenever I attempt to apply Mash to a Mish file with asterisk (*) syntax, either by drag-and-drop or by the file menu, either in OS X (10.1.3) or OS 9 (9.2.2), I get the following error: "Unfortunatly, a disk error has occured. Attached is the file I have been attempting to convert, using bullet () syntax (it should be pretty easy for you to convert it if this is wrong). Please help me figure out how to fix this mess.
3.) I wrote a nifty grep string to convert files produced by Pontus ultimate "EV Text" utility into Mish format:

Replace: * Begin dëscrresIDt1rFilet"EV Data"rDescription:r2r* End dëscI thought you might like to include this in the next release of MishMash somehow.
In the event that any of you reading this thread might have some insights, I've also uploaded the file to my iDisk (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/suluger/.Public/descs (Mish).sit")here(/url). Download is about 41KB.
Other Progress: I've familiarized myself with BlitZen, and managed to shave off about 2 megs from the archive by PNG-compressing all the PICT resources. This doesn't effect post-stuffit download size at all, though. High-quality JPEG compression is even more efficient, but I'm reluctant to use a lossy codec here. I've already had to compromise on the mp3 format for the intro music (speaking of which, if anyone knows a good lossless audio codec that will work with a default installation of QT 3.0 or greater, I'd be interested to hear about it).

All dëscs implemented! (I switched to ResStore since Mash wouldn't be nice to me. A little tougher to understand, but it works fine. I owe my soul to grep.) Ship purchase and hiring descs renumbered quickly and easily thanks to Resorcerer.

My chär resource actually worked briefly this morning, then reverted to its usual behavior. Sigh.
Mercenaries has definitely crossed into playable territory by now. The only major things left are bugfixes, interfaces and (shudder) missions.
