    • EVO color tables

Have some unusual behavior in my Spobs. Been using optimized color tables in converting down to 8-bits, but I am beginning to wonder if EVO doesn't use the Mac System pallet instead. Or, perhaps, the first PICT it loads in any screen sets the available colors?

Anyone have a recommendation for best color table to use for spobs, outfits, etc.? I'd hate to render a lovely landing scene in 256 shades of pale green and discover EVO only uses the two greens from the splash pic's CLUT!

    • My understanding is that EV Override uses 256 colours from a clut for the splash screen, and the standard 256 colours for everything else. That's certainly what's worked best for me.

    • EV:O uses a number of color tables in the program. The clut resource in Override Titles contains the colors used in the intro splash screen, sidebar, and all the graphics contained within windows outside the play window (i.e. planet landing scenes and buttons and such). The clut resource in Override Graphics contains the colors used in the main screen.

So the landing scenes all use that splash screen CLUT? Interesting, and thanks for replying promptly.

I assume by "main screen" you mean all ships, spobs, and weapons effects displayed "on the stars," and those are using the single CLUT from the Override Graphics file? I will try compressing to that -- or collecting a range of graphics and creating a new optimized one -- and try that out. Again, thanks!

(I know, I know, EVN supports million-color JPEG. Think of it as a challenge!)

Actually, it only supports thousands and 256 colours in RLE and PICT.

      Aw.

Oddly enough, there isn't a CLUT in the Overide Graphics file -- just the two stored in the resource in Override Titles. Using the "mac system" or "default" table seems to work well for sprites and shipyard pics, and I now recommend sticking with that (p2s seems to be making the same choise).

Turns out my Spob problem (and a mask problem I was having with larger ships) was due to an error in my work method. I was copying from the resource fork of PhotoShop files. Going through the clipboard from an open file gave much better results.

Progress report: half the ship graphics now installed, mapping begun, 1/4 of the "standard" spob graphics in place. Now modelling basic outfits. Will be flying cargo this weekend.
