So I see that a lot of people are making site for EV and I was wondering what metiod or program do you use to make them.

I started making a site in Adobe PageMill put I cant get it to except slices from PhotoShop, puts these wierd blank spots in between slices. Anyways, I'm thinking of trying a diferent program that makes the use of slices easyer. Sugestions?

    • I prefer opening up SimpleText and coding straight from there... However, if you'd like a program, I'd recommend Dreamweaver -- of course, Dreamweaver is very expensive. Microsoft FrontPage is okay , although if I were you, I'd just code it straight, with SimpleText. I manage my own website (well, it's down for a short time, but it'll be up soon), and I use a program called Evrsoft 1st Page 2000, which is free. Basically, it's a simple text editor that color codes tags -- that's the only difference between it and SimpleText or Notepad. Unfortunately, 1st Page 2000 is only for Windoze. I can't think of any affordable webpage editors for the Macintosh offhand, other than the ones I just listed.

And text editors are for the masochists.

I use dreamweaver, flash and director, as well as some code checking in BBEdit. Some of the sites I've worked on: Weak. (url="http://"http://www.keepwalking.tv")http://www.keepwalking.tv(/url) (url="http://"http://www.tamillard.co.uk")http://www.tamillard.co.uk(/url) (url="http://"http://evdev.damnsw.net")http://evdev.damnsw.net(/url) (url="http://"http://www.sportspark.co.uk")http://www.sportspark.co.uk(/url)

If WYSIWYG editors could produce as good code with as little effort as text editors do, I could understand. Myself, I find using a WYSIWYG HTML editor a great way to waste time while producing no results.

It should also be noted that webpages are often the death of good plugs: The developers become obsessed with a nice webpage and forget to actually work on the plug. It's all to common, really.

I also detest WYSIWYG HTML editors, but they're sometimes helpfull when laying out several complicated tables on top of each other. I've never used them; but I've heard that that is a redeeming feature.

There's a third alternative; assisted text editors. I use PageSpinner quite a bit. It has assistants, it color-codes tags, it has a browser hot-click button...but it is a text editor and gives you complete control over what is going on the page.

    • I just code it all straight in SimpleText, except that in OSX that is gone. Replaced by TextEdit, which you cannot code in. So I have started using BBEdit, but I only have 24 times to open it before it's gone forever. My site is also down because f2s stopped free service and sniff -- hang on I need to get a hold of myself.

OK, if you can afford it go for DreamWeaver I guess. Everytime I have extra money I spend it on other stuff. Coding by hand is much cheaper.

BBEdit has all of those features that you mention (except for the assistants, I think... I don't know, I haven't looked).

As do I -- I don't know what is so complex about them. For the Nova Survival Guide, I'm got a table for the entire page, then a table for the body, then a table for each ship, which contains an emb*dded table for the name, as well as another table for the stats. Then there is a table at the bottom.

Sometimes I turn on all of the borders, just to see what happens. 🙂

    • I use Claris Home Page. I once borrowed a Dreamweaver thingy and tried to use it but it's just....aahhhhehehahahhh....nasty. I don't like it. I don't like PageMill either, as it is really hard to use. I usually also edit HTML from Claris Home Page.

The key here is what kind of page you need to make. I would like to put forward a plea for more of the kind of sites a good text editor creates...clean, fast-loading, not requiring a specific browser, and unlikely to crash the end-user's machine.

The WYSIWYG editors churn out dirty code and practically force the creation of that kind of page that takes ten minutes to load then displays the; "You don't have the right browser and your monitor is too small and, oh, you owe me a half dozen cookies."

If you are making a shipyard co-operated by three-dozen people and updated every hour, sure, reach for the CSS and CGI. If you are going to tell us the progress on your plug, please, let that stuff be. And code in a text editor.

I timed myself on creating a webpage: A blank page that said 'hello world' completely centered in the middle, no matter how you resize it. I timed it from double clicking on the icon, to pressing the 'save' button in the save dialogue.

      Dreamweaver: 46 seconds
      BBEdit: 198 seconds

    • I generally use one of three text editors: SimpleText, Tex-Edit Plus, or BBEdit Lite, depending on which one strikes my fancy at the time. Coding HTML directly tends to result in more efficient code than WYSIWYG editors, which often produce unnecessarily verbiose HTML.

There's a program called HTML optimizer that can scan folders and cut out unessesary code from any html files in that folder. Takes about a minute.

    • -Evil Penguin-

You can code with TextEdit, you just need to switch to Plain Text, under the Format menu, third option down.

Optionally you could fire up Terminal and type in either emacs or pico, pico is ultra basic, emacs takes learning but has a great keyboard interface.

I'd say if you can make a good EV plug in you can code a fine web site from scratch. I use pico. Simple. 😃

    • I use PhotoShop for images, and basic coding in SimpleText for the page. My better designed ones are no longer on the web, as servers have changed. But, take it from a guy who has had 200+ unique hits a day (http://members.shaw....nburn/survivor/), coding in SimpleText is all you need.

Oh, and content helps a lot.
