    • Something's wrong with EvEdit

I've been trying to get the shipyard pics of all the ships from EV and O but my EvEdit is acting up. When ever I enter the EvEdit window were it should show the sprites of the ship all it shows is a blank window, it shows this for the target and comm pic aswell.

Does anybody have and suggestions? I've tried increasing the memory to 90078k but nothing changed. I might redownload EvEdit again and try with a new file.

If you are just trying to extract the pics, ResEdit is very easy to use. You really have to have absolutely no prior knowledge.. just point-click and find what you want(they'll all be together in the proper resource) and copy paste into a graphics program.

EV-Edit always has done things a little funny, and if I remember right(it's been a few years) spin to sprite numbering was always way off of what was suggested in the Bible. Pontus's formula calc might also help you in locating the exact pic's and sprite's location in ResEdit.

Hope this somewhat helps.. if you are against Res-Edit, your only hope is David Arthur's creations.

Something? Yes, as Necromicon said, there is a LOT wrong with EV-Edit. Fortunately I backed up my plug-in, as it corrupted every single ID to something like -14932 for every one. Cursed Ben Chess. And he wanted money for it.

What do you expect? EV-Edit is crap on a stolen pedestal.

    • Heh, I had to laugh when I saw this topic name (no offense). My personal horror story is having EV-Edit set the available record on all my missions to -1, preventing them from being offered unless I had done something evil in a system.

    • What ISN'T wrong with EV-Edit? Use resedit, it is far more reliable. The one plugin I ever tried to make, a good one too, was ruined in it's final phases by that blasted program. Until Ben Chess has refined it and improved it a LOT, use other utilities. If you can afford it, use resourcer, a commercial program that is like resedit on steroids.

Yes. I use ResEdit. The only reason I downloaded EV-Edit was to get the name generator that came in the goodies file. Since my plug-in's at the point (8.8+ MB) where I have to split it into seperate files for ResEdit to work, I would hate to see what EV-Edit would do. Probably wouldn't even load it. Maybe I'll load a backup copy in it just for laughs. I'll see what happens. Hehe.

The only good programs I've found for use with EV are Pontius' creations, EVO map editor, and EV and EVO formula calc. And mission computer can be useful at times - but it's just the guts of certian parts of RedEdit with a good GUI.

Have I set a new record? it took me 15 seconds to find domething EV-Edit has corrupted. And that's without saving anything! Most of the checkboxes have very little meaning (on govt's weak 1, weak 2, strong 1... ???) Add to that the fact that resources are sorted aplhabetically (shudder!) It took me almost a full minute to locate five ship desc's, even though I knew the names. And unnamed resources are sorted above named ones... I will stop there so as not to turn this into a "bash EV-Edit" topic. Although I am afraid we are already most of the way there.

    • actually, gage, ev edit can be set to organize items by id....not that im defending it or anything.....personally i wish someone would just combine ship write and evo god together and make me a giant cup cake to go along with it....make my life a lot easier...

8.8MB files should work fine in ResEdit. Technically you should only need to split the file up once it gets close to 16MB, which is the maximum size of a resource fork. There are other arguments for splitting up your plugin though: it makes it easier for people to pick and choose components (like if they wanted to save on memory by not loading big title sounds or similar stuff). It also means you can update it piece by piece, without having to upload a complete new version of the file each time.

I stopped using EV-Edit years ago. Since then, all the bugs in my plugin have been due to my own mistakes, which is reassuring.

    • EV-Edit is buggy, but it's still a useful tool if you actually want to release something rather than just argue endlessly on the boards about whose plugin will be the biggest ever (gripe off) (set no offence intended on) (set comment was not specifically addressed at above posters on).

There are some specific occasions when EV-Edit will mess up.
Here is how to avoid them 100% of the time.

First, the Mission section doesn't work at all. Don't use it. There are other tools available.

Second, if you reopen a system without altering it, it will reset your percentages to garbage, causing EVO to crash when you enter that system.

Third, EV-Edit crashes on large files. Split up your file into graphics, data 1, data 2 and working. Put the graphics etc stuff into the resources folder. Only ever work on the 'working'. After a session of writing, test what you've done by playing it. If it's ok, use resedit to copy these resources into your data file. If it doesn't track down the problem with plugchecker or by inspection, and then test, and finally copy. This way, if EV-Edit crashes, you can never lose more than one session of work. Also, the chance of it crashing is much reduced.

Finally, always make backups -- whatever programme you are using. Even if you are the demigod of resedit a power failure or coffee sloshed onto your keyboard can wreck your work.

A couple of other things you need to know -- EV Edit is non-standard in where it places graphics. This doesn't stop things working, but it does make for an untidy plugin. Use plugchecker and resedit to sort it all out when you've finished.

Also, a lot of resources can only be edited in ResEdit or its equivalent directly.

So, if I'm recommending tidying up so much in ResEdit, why use EV-Edit at all? Simply, because its the fastest way to flesh out a plugin and to organise your mind while you do it. The biggest problem of a big plug-in is not the coding but the creative consistency. I would (and will) use any programme, trick or technique that helps me express my creativity with fewer limitations.

(set old timer's boring story on) Just in case you think I'm 'soft', when I started programming (set Dilbert-style man with red braces and beard on) we had Z80 machine code (no, I didn't say assembler code). It took forever to programme anything, and if you got it wrong your code would probably delete your programme when you executed it. Today I pretty much only develop in Filemaker Dev edition. It's not that I've gone soft, it's just that I need the results fast, and the less opportunity there is for me to make errors on the way, the better my critical data is preserved. At the end of the day, PlugChecker can sort out all the machine errors that EV-Edit makes. It can't sort out the human 'creative' errors that I make when I work for too long in ResEdit -- as far as PlugChecker is concerned, they aren't errors. But they still mean my plugin doesn't do what I want it to do, and they are murder to track down.

You also have to consider the number of resources in a resource file - the maximum is 2727. When you consider that each ship requires up to 13 resources and each spob up to 7 it's easy to see how that number can be exceeded in a large plug.
