      k, check it out. (url="http://"http://kubrick.cdes.qut.edu.au/~n2740281/hwtest.sit")http://kubrick.cdes....0281/hwtest.sit(/url)

the readme says it all, but i've just thought that a little intro story could be fun.

so, you just finished wiping the ue forces into stardust when you spotted a little vessel at close range shoot a little missile at you. even though everyone knows renegades are the fastest, most talented pilots in the universe, you don't think you'll be able to dodge it, and rather than having your polished record of never being shot tarnished, you decide to jump out of the system because it's too established. As you reenter 'nilobjectexception' errors pop up left, right and off-center. You also notice another ship exactly like yours, except there's something different about it.

then some more stupid stuff happens and everyone says, shutup you suck at game stories. just shutup! you'll kill us all.

      so i did.

      then tycho won the pullitzer cause he can spell real good. and his grammar rocks';

i think there was more to go in here but i can't remember.

    • yeah, i second that.

the game's so root, we're all owned.

everything's gonna be hackin' it out with everyone, even national defense.

then the sky of knives!!! take everyone by surprise. real hoot. we'll drink snapple then.

Let's take it back to the concrete streets, original beats and real live MC's...

    • I was sorta discouraged from trying it out when I read the little factoid about it ruining ports.. if you could perhaps clarify. 🙂 I'm waiting for the more-than-two-player version, playable over a LAN. But I can live with this.

(edit) Right, I forgot... what format is the readme in? It wouldn't open correctly... I had to load MSWord and then open it.

    • This must be Thursday.

I never COULD get the hang of Thursdays.

How....BAD......a day can I have? What's going to happen next? A tree fall on my
      head?

Arg. Arg arg arg arg ARG. This is the worst possible thing that could happen.

And the network thing too! Arg.

And for those who DON'T know what I'm talking about, I have a PC. Don't ask why.
Plus, it's over a LAN. Don't ask why. Plus, I'm going to go hang myself.

      Don't ask why.

LANs rock! Big ones! With G4's! Ok, maybe not... but just plain LANs do rock.

    • title: damn, it was a thursday.

      tycho's port rant.
well it doesn't really ruin them. sometimes realbasic has a nack of not clearing the ports when it crashes. this is not surprising.

so say you used port 999. and it crashes(the app not your box). then there's a possibility that you won't be able to use port 999 again until you reset the network. that could involve reconnecting to your service provider. but when you do that you can use port 999 again. i think there might be a port zapper somewhere you could use instead, but i'm not sure. but who cares. if it happens just use port 1000 or 1001 or 1002 or 1003 or 1004 or 80. heh, yeah use 80. and 25. and 23. they're good ones to muck with.

the readme is in plain text. i wrote it up in bbedit. i can't believe you don't have it. it's just like the other day when someone told me they still use windows!!!! and i said, 'what? for solitaire or something?'.

and was that a plea for lan support? what type of lan? like a printer-cable appletalk job?

one last thing. can everyone now put titles on their posts. then we can go, 'hah! and remember- 'your prog blew up by cube, i'm gonna kill you'? hehehee, yeah he threatened and stalked me but he didn't have the guts.'

      Where the Hell's my roof?

    • Dear Tycho,

First of all, this is an impressive piece of a game for RealBasic. I hear that you only have 1 PM6200/75 and you have to test the network using the one machine. Well for a game that actually works (network wise) that's a bit of an effort. Congrats.

Second, Tested the game using 2 G4s 400Mhz, MacOS 9.0.4 over a 10/100 Ethernet. Worked great. Was a little hiccup when the bullet sprite had to load (half a second pause). Oh and that nil objects thing, have you got a end screen that the game could go to, saying Blue/Purple is the winner. Having an end might fix that problem as it would give the program somewhere to go. And then you could load up a start new game screen so that the port wouldn't be lost.

Third, Maybe increase the number of bullets needed in a game, because on G4s battles don't take very long. Also you might want to think about diff sounds. Just a thought.

    • I've been thinking about that nil objects thing and this is my two cents.

When somone destroys the other ship then they crash. However the other computer continues to exist as if nothing happened.

So maybe you missed a bit of code which says 'oh yeah destroy that ship on this computer as well because you were destroyed over here'.

Because otherwise you've got a logic probem happening where a ship exists in one computer but is destroyed in the other.

Huh Huh hUH. Am I the programmign genius. Where would i be with out me?

      Salami Capable.
Neutral Dwarf Cleaver Latex Grill Cleaner

    • where's my titles?

yeah, i'm a sentient being. that's how i do my coding and testing on my pm6200. you shouldn't dis the 603 maybe it's a 603e. i think it was one of the models that they incorporated quantum processor techniques. it keeps opening worm holes everywhere. lost my scanner today.

hang on!!!! you fake actor!!! i know you!! you and your little dog. differnet sounds!! haha you can talk!!!! maybe you can record me some stuff in the lab, like bunsen burners and dna. and while you're at it make me those finishing screens. make sure you put links to your site. it's so relevant.

yeah real genius!!!! the only resean the other guy doesn't die is because the game is way outta sync. it may looked like you destroyed the other guy but to them it looks like you've just flown around aimlessly. huh huh huh. did you notice that programmer boy!!!

      Tycho

      Where the Hell's my roof?

    • Hey fanboy (finally worked it out),

Big talk for small programmer. Just hush on the flying simian army, 'kay.

yeah real genius!!!! the only resean the other guy doesn't die is because the
game is way outta sync. it may looked like you destroyed the other guy but to them
it looks like you've just flown around aimlessly. huh huh huh. did you notice that
      programmer boy!!!

Preclude me from interjecting, but my genius tallies forth.

Send a destruct signal to the other computer, so that Mr. Spaceship goes bye bye!!

Actually on a proper system (g4s) they are not out of syn and everything works fine, even mr. bullets. Which hence is where the game over command would be nice.

And you'll get your damn screens when you admit that you'll never get the hang of them thar FPS, just like maisel did.

    • that's it! you're insolence will get you murderised! 'i don't think that's a good idea, davey' they'll go, but i know the truth.

if the games were syncing correctly then the other ship would be destroyed on both games. bit it up man. big it up!

if i send destruct signals off around the ether, then all sorts of crazy jazz will happen. that space station will explode and those mechs in japan will explode.
then we'll have to build a time machine and go back and stop it from happening. but don't let anyone bring cell back with them!

      Tycho

      ------------------
      Where the Hell's my roof?

    • Yes but in all seriousness Cell's timeline should have vanished and that whole going back in time thing wouldn't exist.

But then you have to admit that your code is lacking hence the nil objects. So therefore you haven't put the when command x triggers command y then transmit details to machine A1 and A2 and A1->n.

This all stems back to systems theory where P{x} -> f(d) -> P{y}. The formatting is complex but the math isn't. In other words every action leads to an equal and utterly opposite reaction. Hence in theory this works. however if i were to bash you on the head with a hammer, you would not turn around and massage my feet with a fish, because you would be dead. And this is my point. It's only a theory until someone ends up dead.

Which getting back to the initial motivation, is that you must have an end. Just as the myth 'Raven Brings Light' always ends in Raven bringing light. So too Helian Wars must been a 'you must explode now because your shoot count has equaled this and because the other computer has already blown you up. Hence so even if your code is desperately out of sync, then you make up to it by fudging and saying well it's blown up here so you may as well blow up on this computer as well.

Fudging is a common practise in the computer world. Of course the greatest example is Windows, but even within the gaming community we have examples: Tribes 2 is primarily grey, because they can't program. You must therefore insert a fake command because you can't program.

And I rest my case....I mean case dismissed.

      It doesn't work. 😉

      Title: Dude, where's my ship?!

I loaded the game on one computer, entered a port number in the server box, and clicked it. Went to the other computer, launched the game, and entered the same port as the one in the server. (1000 or something.) The game took a second, then loaded a black screen with a small menu bar with one option. Quit. The server did the same thing when I pressed "Serve" again.
