    • NOVA Graphical Constants

Ok, maybe this has been addressed a thousand times before, but, um, where can I find the graphical constants for Nova? Like for a landing pic, as EV's/EVO's 333x271, or shipyard pics, 100x100...?

Again, I'm terribly sorry if this is just another annoying repetition of a question.

I know for sure that shipyard and comm pics will be 200x200 pixels (yes! ;)). As for landing pic size, I've never received an answer to that one...

    • 200x200?? Wow. That's rather large. Except the crappy thing is that plug-in ports to Nova will have to rework all the graphical things, among code issues...Fortunately I made some 250x250. I think.

I checked a landing picture from the Ship of the Day and it was 612x285, so the ingame graphics are probably something close to that.

    • Well, I looked at the "Gem is Truly Outrageous" screenshot, so I guess I can use that for my template, even though it's probably from an alpha build. I'm not sure what it is, but it sounds about 612x285...

      Thanks

    • There's another ship graphic in Nova, which is visible in the Ship Info window (it usually depicts the ship flying through gorgeous space scenery). I looked at it last night, and the dimensions seem to be 600x401, but I'm probably off by a pixel.
Although this is probably pretty obvious, outfit pics will also be 200x200.
Also, small shipyard and outfit graphics will stay at 32x32.

The developers have referred to these as '600x400 pictures'.

EV Nova doesn't need (or accept) the small shipyard and outfit graphics, it generates them automatically from the 200x200 versions.

    • As David Arthur has correctly stated there are on three different sizes for images in Nova:

      Landing Scenes: 612x285
      Ship, Outf picts: 200x200
Ship Scenes (as seen in the ship info dialog): 600x400

The first and last can be changed according to whatever ditl and dlog sizes you choose, but the middle one is more difficult to mess with.

But if you want to use the EV Nova ditl and dlog resources as they are, the above sizes are what you need.

    • Word. No more fooling with thumbnails? Also, I suppose then that each ship has a 600x400, a 200x200, and I assume the comm will be 200x200 too. I checked the screenshot, and it appears that 612x285 is correct.

There is no longer a separate pict for shipyard and comm pict, they both use the same image.

    • Interesting. They were always wretched to render, comm pics.

      Cool.
I got all these from whatever graphical scraps I could dig up, so forgive me for my inaccuracy.
By the way, does anyone know what the ship target graphic's dimensions are?

From the screenshots I've seen, it looks like they're the same size as in Escape Velocity and EV Override.

Awesome. Thanks for the verification. I had no idea about the "ship scene" feature...

Is this because NOVA scales the 200x200 pixel image down on-the-fly to the 32x32 pixel icon? Is there actually a way to change this? In previous versions of EV, changing the DITL would cause EV to stretch the image to fit. If this behavior is retained, changing the DITL to 100x100 (for a straight port of EV classic) wouldn't be impossible, as EVN would down-sample the 200x200 image in the resource fork for both the icon and the larger picture, right?

    • Offhand, I don't believe that the size of the 200x200 images is fixed internally. Nova should scale whatever you give it to the size of the DITL items (up or down).
      .
The size of the 32x32 thumbnail icons is fixed, but they're generated on the fly anyway.
