I've done a space station (in Mechanisto) and created a background in Photoshop.

As I render the Station with the back ground, it looks like the station is suspended in front of a picture. The sense of realism is gone and the pic dosn't look good.

Does any one know how I could fix this?

Backgrounds in Mechanisto are kind of shaky, in my experience. The render angle is the main thing that changes the feel of the scene. And the lighting is also a big issue, though I've only messed around with the basics in Mechanisto. I had the same problem in Poser, using a figure in front of a scene... It also depends on what the background is.

I'd just as soon buy C4D XL or Strata3D Pro, both of them are only about a hundred dollars more with an academic discount.

Give me a good reason why not to.

rebel counsel: try rendering the object in Mechanisto and inserting it into Photoshop, I'm not sure how well, this will work, since I don't use Photoshop, but it's work a try. You might also try putting the background on a plane in Mechanisto and rotating it.

Mechanisto's backgrounds work great for me. What you need to do to make the whole image look good depends on what you have in the background; if you have a planet, you have to worry about making sure the ligthing on the station matches what you have on the planet. Otherwise, just make the ambient lighting 0 and mess with directional lights, using at least two from different directions with different intestity and color. Especially for stations, you can also try placing some point lights on the model, but that depends on what the model and the scene look like. Check out (url="http://"http://www.integraonline.com/~ckey/3d/")Onyx's texture guide(/url) for more lighting tips. I can give you some more specific advice once I see what you've got so far.
