    • Mechanisto Question

How do I make spikes like those seen on (url="http://"http://home.earthlink.net/~squibix/art/artships/scout.jpg") This ship of Squibix's(/url) in mechanisto? I tried taking the cigar shape (cylinder with hemisphere on either side) and making it smaller and smaller, but I could not get it small enough to be like the spikes on other ships I have seen... The smallest that mechanisto would let me make it was .01, and that was still pretty big.

      Suggestions?

    • You wanna make one of those little spikes? Just create a curve and wrap it around the y-axis. I forget the whole name for that because I haven't used the program in a while, but it should allow you to design your own spike.

    • You cannot wrap a curce around an axis. You cannot transform a curve at all, for it is not an object.

    • Ares1, all that you need to do is scale your cigar shaped object down to .01, and then but that object into a group, and scale that group down as low as you want. You can do this many times to make something as small as you want.

    • Most people don't realize that Mechanisto only displays two decimal places, but you can go to the thrid (and beyond?) if you type it in. This is an observatio that I made awhile ago, so it may not be correct.

    • No, mechanisto rounds the number to two decimal places. But using the lathe function, you can still wrap that curve around the y-axis. All you need to do is zoom in enough and resize it later as you see fit.

This is the obvious solution, but I've never actually expressly done it like that. I usually create the bit that I want (in this case the antennas, and their mountings) at a reasonable scale and then scale the group to fit the ship. If you shrink every part smaller than .01 individually, you're more likely to have trouble assembling the bits. Of course, there are no doubt instances where you'd want to do just what Azdara Ace said.
