Purposely left the saucer like that... faster render... etc... Objects... I'll estimate around 20... not a lot. I haven't built the bottom, the deflector, the nacelles (the current ones are basically slapped on shît) or impulse engines yet. The new nacelles alone I would estimate about 10 parts each...

Rotate the other one around the y axis until it roughly matches the angle of the trailing edge of the plane, then move it back until it's roughly in place along that edge. Then fine-tune both the rotation and the z position until the line down the middle of the sphere matches the edge of the plane (in the top-down view window). I came up with a y rotation of -27 and a z translation of -0.49

When I do this, it causes the cylinder on the top (when viewed from above - the one that had to be rotated and moved to line up with the plane's edge) is not long enough. According to what your render looks like, it should be about 1.1 on the Y, but in the tutorial you never say to change it. When I render this it looks wrong...

The sample wings you have up for download has a broken link...

I believe that you mean the x and z, because changing the Y makes it long going down as opposed to the plane that is horizontal. I am finding a lot of small errors like this that can really throw you off... You may want to go through and do everything youself, step by step, completely ignoring your intuition, just to make sure it is all correct. Or you may want someone else to do it for you.

    • A small example of what can be done by a beginner (this is only my third) w/o Mechanisto. The full version can be seen (url="http://"http://www.pacificnet.net/~restorer/3d/BlindGooseFull.jpg")here(/url).

I made this trying to recreate this:

Different, but within reason. I call this one "Blind Goose" because, well, it sorta looks like a blind goose... right? Again, this is only my third model. It has about 12 primitives and 10 excrutiatingly hand-modeled unique objects. In total, it has 38 or so objects. Took me three hours to create, texture, and render. Like? I really can't explain the gray squares on the wings. They don't hurt, but I didn't put them there... My first ship and a butchered UE Fighter can be found (url="http://"http://www.pacificnet.net/~restorer/3d/")here(/url). Tell me what you think.

      -Matt

P.S.: I use Ray Dream Studio 5, in case you were wondering. The free form modeller is a godsend, and the mesh form modeller isn't too shabby either.

      No.

I've already put quite a few hours into this project, and I'm far from willing to spend a couple more doing something that mindlessly boring. I'll check out the things you pointed out to see where I went wrong, and I'll fix any more you or anyone else tell me about--you note I put a mail link inviting you to submit mistake reports on the bottom of every page of the tutorial--but beyond that I decline to do any more work on this particular project.

And anyways, who's to say a few mistakes aren't all for the good? They keep you on your toes. You don't gain that much if all you end up learning is how to make this one ship following along step by step.

Oh aye? It works for me... Oh, no it doesn't! It used to... Aha, I see what happened. My apologies... it should be fixed now.

Nope. I put the rotate first, so for my cylinder it were z and y that do it. You can certainly feel free to put the rotate after in this case, but it means you have to modify the other instructions accordingly.

    • Do you think you could send me the model of the finished ship, or post it on the site? I am having a lot of trouble with the directions, and there are just a few things I need to see, but can't get the directions to work for me to do them. I am better at learning by looking at things, rather than being told how to do them.

    • Ok, the image is very fuzzy and I still need to add a few things, but here is my latest ship:

I plan to add guns to the nose, as well as the pods. I may replaced the lines connecting the pods to the ship with wings, but I'm not sure yet. Comments?

    • ares1, the view you have chozen does not do your ship justice, it would be nicer if it was a shipyard view. But, from what i can see from here, it looks like a nice start. I'm currently working on a mech, I'll put a picture of what it looks like so far here soon.

    • Much better, where did you get those nice textures? Also, maybe make the cocpit a little sleeker, it sticks up too high fot the ship to be aerodynamic. Great start!

    • I got the textures from Meowx's texture depot. I am trying to use them quickly, as I am soon to lose my account, seeing as how I have no textures to upload, and don't know how to make them. :frown:

In space, there is little to no matter to cause drag, and therefor the concept of aerodynamics is pointless in a vacuum like space. If this was a car, maybe, but not a space ship. 😛

    • According to everything I have read and heard, EV style ships take off horizontal to the ground, like a helicopter, rather than space-shuttle style. If not, take-off and landing would be a huge deal, and coming and going from planet to planet would be impossible. This means that as objects protrude from the top it would make no difference - actually, my design is quite aerodynamic in that respect.

    • Look at the EV station graphics - one, if not all, have circular pads extending out of it. This means that to land you must come down vertically, and take off horizontal to the ground. 😛

      :pBlah! 😛

About the textures, just throw together some grey squares in photoshop that looks sort of like metal plating. It will take awhile to make decent shaders though, I haven't gotten even close to making a good one. Also, i think that Meowx is most conscerned about whether or not you are participating, not whether or not you make good shaders.

      Again, about aerodynamics:

    • Speaking of shaders, can someone explain the glow effect by using halo better than the documentation does? I've tried using it, and it doesn't look anything like it's glowing. In fact, it mostly just looks like crap. 😐 I could do it with multiple objects easily enough, but that would be a pain.
