    • EVO universe timeline?

      Has anyone created a timeline of the EVO universe backstory? I'm just checking before I reinvent the wheel.

    • To my knowledge, no one has. It is not really a great idea to do so; open ended games are very hard to make timelines of.

      Are we talking about the same things? There are specific events discussed within the EVO storyline: Voinians?sp? attacking the Emgala?sp?, attack against Earth, etc.

    • I spent about a week trying to build one, but was with only one or two exceptions never able to glean anything solid. I was able to come up with something rough by assuming solid dates for vague terms, a la the Star Trek chronology by Michael Okuda. Here's what i've got:

      Assumptions:
      EVO Begins in 2148 (EVO was released in 1998 and the year offset is +150)
      A couple = 2
      A few = 3
      some = 5
      a handful = 5
      several = 7
      almost = 5% less than
      a little more than = 5% more than
      an age = 2000 years, according to Chinese astrologers.
      All dates are A.D.

      c 148 - The Strand Wars begin (“an age ago”, desc 379)
      c1848 - Earth contains approximately 10 times as many species as it will in 2148 (str# 8101, 10)
      c1948 - The Zidagar poison the Azdgari Homeworld. (desc 337)
      1957 - Sputnik I launched, space age begins (historical fact)
      1961 - Yuri Gagarin orbits earth, manned spaceflight begins (historical fact)
      c1998 - Stellarcorp founded (“a century and a half, desc 151)
      c2043 - UE Freighter is invented (“over a century ago, desc 2001)
      c2053 - New Riga supplements Earth’s dwindling natural resources (“almost a century ago”, desc 134)
      c2098 - Tmidran is colonised by the miranu (“some decades ago”, desc 256)
      c2098 - F6129 is colonised by the UE. (“half a century ago”, 137)
      c2128 - The last major voinian/human confrontation (intro text, speculation)
      c2128 - Freeport is constructed (“a long time ago”, desc 187)
      c2143 - Azdgari forces capture Outpost Rai from renegades (“some” years ago, desc 306)
      c2145 - Work on Miranu Gunship begins (a “few” years ago, desc 4117)
      c2145 - Renegades begin using needle missiles (a “few” years ago, desc 4047)
      2148 - EVO begins (1998 + 150 = 2148)
      c2158 - All ships are equipped with NPD devices (str# 8102, 😎
      c2200 - Bank of Earth plans to have universal currency (str# 8101, 😎
      c15193794250 - Universe ends, according to Ali Saidi who is misquoting Durandal from Marathon II) (str# 7100, 22)

      Notes:
      Humans had spacelfight for “a century” before they made contact with the Voinians, which puts Voinian first contact at 2057 if we date from Sputnik I or 2061 if we date from Yuri Gagarin

      The last major Voinian confrontation took place about a generation before EVO starts, which is usually held to be about twenty years (Boomers, Hippies, Yuppies, Gen-X, Gen-Y are all separated by a little under 20 years)

      Before the emalgha fell, they had “recently” acheived spacelfight. The emalgha were occupied for “almost a century”, and the rebellion took place around the time of the battle of Sol. Given a span of less than ten years between first contact and the battle of Sol, this should put the advent of Emalgha spaceflight at about the same time as the our own first steps, and their conquering shortly after that.

      This was researched and compiled by me, 5/30/1999.

      Thank you so much. If the idea I have evolves into anything, you'll be one of the first to know.

    • That is one nice timeline. It does raise questions about why human ships can still kick Crescent ass even though the Crescent races have had space flight for at least a thousand or so years.

      You could argue it from a predator/prey model. The crescent ship rely a great deal on shielding vs armor. This might indicate that the homeworld of the orginal race had high gravity or a minimum of natural resources. For whatever reason, the reliance on shielding meant weapons were necessarily geared toward destroying shielding. Maybe it was just a cultural blind spot; no one used armor, so no one thought to use armor.

      The Voinians, however, are at the other end of the spectrum, using lots and lots of armour. Shielding is probably easier to add than armour, so it makes sense to me that human renegades would be using more and more sophisticated shielding. Because the humans govts have to fight human renegades AND the Voinians, it makes sense their weapons are good against armor and shileds.

      One of the things that bothered me a lot about EVO was that the human renegades and strand renegades were close in proximity, yet there was apparently no exchange of technology. The human renegades should have been coming out with whoop-ass shield generators while the strand renegades would have started using more and more armor. In general, the renegade factions should have started getting quite powerful by exchanging technology.

    • Good timeline, I stand corrected... mostly. Some of those later ones can vary a bit depending on when the pilot does certain missions. The circa is not enough; as the years go by (assuming it will still be played) the offset date will make some of those completely nonsensical. Maybe use an equation for some? (i.e. c. now+150years) Or not. It's pretty darn good as it is; I'm impressed. It will be adequate for any story writing in the near future, certainly.

    • Thanks... I put it together years ago (literally), and it was just lying around. Figured I oughta do something useful with it.

      Anyway, it's intensely vague. I've cited all the sources I could find in descs and strings, but I don't think any of them refer to solid dates... always "a few years ago" or "a generation ago" or somesuch. As such, circa is about as good as we'll ever get. As for the start date, Date of Game's Release + Year Offset was always the convention in the original EV (we assume the state of the universe as the game begins corresponds to May of 2246 when writing fan fiction, at least)

      Ah well. Have fun ironing out the sticky points, and I'm glad to have been of service.
