How big are the ship graphics supposed to be for EV/O? The FAQ says 100 by 100 pixels and 32 by 32 pixels but these are incredibly small and I don't think that that's correct.

    • That's the correct size from EV Classic, and I've never noticed any difference between the two while playing them.

You could always pull a PICT of the appropriate type from the graphics file into Graphic Converter to double check.

Those are the correct sizes for the shipyard pictures.
If you are talking about the game sprites, they can be almost any size, but each dimension should be a multiple of eight. Note also that large sprites - say more than 100 pixels - tend to slow down the game and do not rotate smoothly.

    • Yeap, 100 by 100 and 32 by 32 is all you need to remember.

One nice feature about Nova is that shipyard and outfit sizes will be 200 by 200 pixels. Better yet, you can use Quicktime movies...

also, the maximum size (of the whole sprite, not just one frame) is 640x480, so the limit is 102x80 (or more obscure sizes if you rearrange the tiles)

if you find yourself in bed with a raving lunatic, don't worry: looks can be deceiving, it's probably not me

    • The ev and evo engines automatically scaled the pictures to the correct size no matter what size they were created at. It is a waste of a few k but I just use the 100 x100 for the 32x32 also. Thats not cheating, is it?

I wouldn't think so, but how tough is it to scale it on your own? Takes about 10 seconds at most in Graphic Converter. And images do take up a lot of the space in a plug, especially big ones, so it may take up more room than you think.

Exactly. They have to be a multiple of eight anyway. If you dont scale it you can the engine has to do it for you and it can result looking pretty crappy as the colors could look messed up. You are bessed to do it yourself as that way you can always photoshop in/out colors.

    • actually the scaling doesn't look to bad in EV and EVO. Besides, these I just use this for small plugins where it doesn't make too much of a difference. Where do you get graphic converter?

Incorrect. The caveat in the EV Bible is about making the ship (not the sprite graphics PICT) larger than 648x480. There have been many plug-ins with ships larger than 102x80.

You can get graphic converter at (url="http://"http://www.lemkesoft.de/")http://www.lemkesoft.de/(/url) . It's a great program.

    • Ships- largest in EV/EVO I've seen work with little trouble, 208x208 pixels per frame (myself, david, metzen, have done this big with success...)
