Hi everyone, we are currently making a plug in for EVN. The plug as you might imagine is still in the concept stage but we would like everyone's feedback on the ideas we have and the website we have set up to keep people informed about development and to give you a taste for the plug. We would be greatfull if you could check out (url="http://"http://evnfullstop.tripod.com")http://evnfullstop.tripod.com(/url) and let us know if everything is working and your oppinion of the site is.

      I hear they're good

    • Looks pretty nice overall. 🙂 That said, a few things could use improvement though:

      • Shrink that navigation ... thingy a bit, as it's taking up over half the page.

      • The text could use some grammatical fixing, and a little lengthening would be nice as well.

      • The splash screen seems to have nothing whatsoever with the plug. 🙂

    • hey there I'm stuart lynn from the site, I've put it together over the past few days with the graphics done by paul (the undead) Neil. thanks for the comments, we where intending to shrink the interface anyway and will be adding more content to the site as things with the pulg progresses. I also appologise for the spelling/grammer mistkes, I'm a student scientist (physics and maths) and as such my spelling handwriting and grammer are
well typically crap. I'm going to get paul to run over the site and change anything that needs changing.
Thanks once again for your input and I hope that you will be a regular visitor to the site/

    • Uaaghhh!

I'm sorry, I don't mean to offend you; please don't take this the wrong way, but your site design is horrible.

Your splash page is pointless -- the image doesn't even load before the refresh takes effect -- and splash pages are bad ideas anyway. All they do is waste time, and they tend to make search engines ignore your pages.

Your blue text is utterly unreadable on a black background.

Get a hosting provider that doesn't do pop-ups.

Your navigation is absolutely horrid! Who told you that was a good idea? You're using Mystery Meat Navigation, one of the worse ideas in web design, ever. There's no clear indication what any of those red dots are. There's no indication that they're even links. And if the user happens to mouse over them by sheer accident, the indication of what the link is, gets displayed nearly half a screen away! If I had a small screen, I might be scrolled down so that the TV thing was off the screen entirely. How would I know what those things were in that case? Here's a site on why Mystery Meat Navigation is bad: (url="http://"http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/badnavigation.html")http://www.webpagest...navigation.html(/url) Your page doesn't work with javascript disabled. It doesn't work on iCab.

I don't mean this to be a flame in any way; this is my honest opinion as someone who has written a fair number of websites. This is my constructive criticism: the only thing good about your site is that it's about a plug-in for EV. Your site sucks. It's bad in nearly every way a website can be bad. The only ways it could be worse involve porn, gratuitous use of the <blink> tag, or Java applets of animated cartoon animals running around.

This is NOT a flame. I don't think you're a bad web designer, or a bad plug-in designer, or a bad person. You just made a mistake. You saw this ooh-shiny thing out there, and used it without thinking about how people going to your site would interact with it. I've made mistakes like that before too. Please don't feel like I'm attacking you personally.

Here are my suggestions: Lose the javascript entirely or just have it for basic rollovers. Here's a method you might consider, that doesn't use javascript at all: (url="http://"http://www.boogiejack.com/howx021.html")http://www.boogiejack.com/howx021.html(/url) Use text for the links, or if you really must, images of text. Lose the TV thing entirely. Use text for links, or simple graphics buttons, or both together.

And most importantly, put some information about the actual plug-in on the first page! The Title of the page should be "EV FullStop: a EV Nova Plugin", not "Welcome". The name of the plug should be in a big header on the top of your page so that everyone who goes to that page knows immediately what plug-in the page is for. Put at least one or two ships on the front page so that people get an immediate taste.

Right now, your page is not about an EV plugin. It's about big, pointless, annoying navigation. It gets in your way, it's distracting, disturbing, disheartening and disgusting. Nix it ASAP.

Sorry but I have to agree with WickedDyno. The general design isnt good. I will leave the cryticism at that as I thought what WickedDyno said summed it up perfectly. Never have a navigation feature that takes up over 60% of the page. That should be pretty obvious to anyone.

    • Hi again everyone, we would just like to thank everyone for the advice given here, regardless of if you liked the site or not. We have made a few changes, including making the interface smaller and will continue to update the site(the race section is now online). We would however like to point out that the site we have online if far from finnished. A lot of the things suggested we already knew about and where going to fix anyway. Though we knew of these faults we decided to put the site online anyway and see what people thought. Anyway thanks once again for everyones help and please visit the site often for updates cause we feel that the plug we are develoing will be something to talk about.

      thanks

    • I have to agree with several of the previous comments:

      1. kill the splash page, it took waaaaay to long to load and is useless, reduce it to a logo at the top of your intro page or the about area
      2. do something with those random red buttons, you have a tv screen there, use a mouseover command with alt graphics and pop something in there when you mouse the button
      3. all of the pages are broke except the intro, the navigation tools are over the content, bad coding (in netscape anyway, didn't check it with IE, always check your pages in multiple browsers and design for max compatibility)
      4. the text is to dark, lighten it for better reading, I got eye strain reading it
      5. make graphics smaller to improve load times on slow connections

      ------------------

    • Thanks, EbonWeaver

First, I must say that I'm not killing the splash-screen. Then, that we tested the site on numerous browsers and platfroms(Mac, IE5, Netscape 6 and Opera. On the PC, Netscape) As for the red buttons I didn't consider how hard it would be for anyone to discover their purpose but I'll get stu to do someting about that as soon as possible.

and the text, turn the brightness on your monitor up if you have trouble reading it 🙂

The splash screen is pointless because the image doesn't load before the redirect takes effect, so no one actually sees your image. Did you by any chance test your site on browsers with Javascript turned off? More people surf with Javascript turned off than with Netscape 4.x -- ~15% for the former, ~10% for the latter. Dark blue text on black is just plain unreadable. You shouldn't expect people to adjust their settings for your site.

Look, it's your site -- if you don't want anyone to visit more than once, it's your funeral.

    • Okay, so new idea I'm going to redesign the whole site taking into account the suggestions above

      1 No spash screen
2 Blue text doesn't work well against a black background
3 It needs more obvious buttons

and numerous other things.....But what I really need now is to know what people want to see in a web-site...Ideas on where things should be and examples of website layouts would be nice as well

      ------------------
      I'm not dead

    • That navigation thing only works on the front page, after that it just gets in the way, make a little thing for the top that isn't so central.
News should have the newest stuff on top.
Just make labels for the red dot things.

    • Thanks, I was thinking about making the interface smaller and more vertical, Taking about an inch of screen. That would make navigation a bit easier and you wouldn't have to scroll down to see the page

      ------------------
      I'm not dead

    • That would definitely be an improvement. The Mystery Meat Navigation also needs to go.
