EVO Developer's map is definitely the most stable slick app, and the slickest stable app. Pontus has also been very responsive to what users want.
However, don't forget R&Rs; various tools, which complement rather than duplicate Pontus's work.
Schmelta V is still an old stalwart for missions, though (despite some bugs) R&R; has really replaced it for me.
I don't know why people hate EV-Edit so much. Providing you backup regularly, it's ideal for fleshing out a large plugin quickly. If you then check with Plugin checker (another classic tool), and make all the corrections in ResEdit, you have a fairly bullet proof plugin. Note that the Mission stuff in EV-Edit doesn't work at all, so there's no point even trying to use it. Also note that for EVO, EV-Edit allows you to put movies everywhere, whereas in fact EVO is much more particular.
I guess what really soured me on EV-Edit was when it went Shareware -- nobody really wants to pay for an application that doesn't entirely work and that corrupts data about half the time. However, if you can live with the long entry screen, it is definitely a required piece of your arsenal.
BTW, Pontus has some other **** tools that are definitely worth checking out. They solve particular little problems that are difficult to get your mind round otherwise, or very annoying in ResEdit.
