    • Pers/Mission ship names

I've proably thought of somewhere around 150 names for pers and mission ships, and I can't think of any more! Right now I don't know what I will need more names for, but I know I'll need them. Any help would be appreciated.

    • Try just using what they do, then make it into their name. For instance: a guy who is a traitor, make him Traue: TRAitor UE. That is how I think up my random names.

Good sources of names (often weird, but effective):
      1. Talk random gibberish to yourself. Occasionally, syllables will connect and form new words. These, of course, work best for aliens, and their planets/systems/stuff.
      2. Perform ROT-13 (and ROT-n) operations on, well, anything. People's names work a lot. But a tip: avoid double letters, and words with a lot of vowels near one another. They tend not to work very easily.
      3. A common suggestion is to use words from another language. Realize, however, that you might not want people to know what the source of the word is, especially if you use it somewhat improperly.
      4. Similar to number one. Get a TV that switches channels fast, and just hold the channel up button down. Write down any useful names you get.

      Warnings about names:
      1. Especially with the gibberish methods, it's easy to have a name "hit you" because you heard it elsewhere. Try to avoid names that even sound like those from other series/games.
      2. Make either all names easily pronounceable, or a common sense of gibberish-ness. This can be changed between different alien groups, if appropriate.
      3. VERY difficult to do, but many appreciate similar sounds in things named from the same group of aliens.

      Good luck, anyway.

    • That's great if I'm trying to think of alien names, but most of the time I'm not. But I do like your idea about things in differnt languages.

Then, possible sources of human names: get a road atlas, open it to a state (the closer to Nebraska the better), and pick the names of the little towns that barely get mentioned (doesn't work as well in England with all the "ham"'s. Find the names of back-benchers in either the american congress, british parliament, or wherever. Recycle them.

First names are always safe. Non-unique last names are safe. Nicknames are safe. Using both first and last name may not be safe, especially if the character is evil and/or like its namesake.

    • i was only planning on using nicknames. I would never use someone's real name without thier permission first, and that wouldn't work too well for a ship anyway.

    • Actually, it will proably be either the GDWF Diddlysquat, PUS Diddlysquat, VLS Diddlysquat, NRRF Diddlysquat, or just plain Diddlysquat. Let me know if you have a preference.
