I did something dumb once with ResEdit and accidentally deleted the invisible "Icon" files that store icon info for folders for a few of my folders. This is no problem, but now I cannot change the icon of those folders with missing "Icon" files. However, for two of them, somehow I manage to recreate the files by messing around with the type and creator codes in ResEdit. Here's my question: How do I create icon files to change the icon of a folder? I know what resources to use, I just need to know what to set the "Type" and "Creator" codes to.

Simple way: Copy the icon to the clipboard, click on the folder, go file->get info, click on the icon in the top left, paste. Now the icon file inside the folder will be recreated, and your custom icon will be there

Or at least, it will create a new "icon" file into the folder that you could change afterward.

Changing the creator and type should not fix the icon. What you did was make the system like that the file belonged to something that it wasn't- which might of had a icon, and then you were able to put in a new one.

Try checking the box "uses custom icon"

This is not possible to do. If you try to paste a new icon, I get a warning that says the operation could not be performed for unexpected reasons (the fact that the icon file is gone is the reason).

Uh? Anyway, open resedit, go to 'Get File/Folder Info', find the folder, get info, uncheck 'has custom icon', retry the paste. Custom folder icons ar more complex than sticking a file called 'icon' in the folder.

Let me explain myself... Icon information for folders are stored in an invisible file called "Icon" within that folder. This file contains the proper resources for displaying a custom icon -- just like with any document, but for a folder, icon information must be stored in a separate file. I accidentally deleted this invisible file called "Icon", and I need to know what to set the Type and Creator fields to in order to duplicate a new icon file. I did it once before, somehow, for one of the folders, but doing the exact same thing did not solve my problem for other folders.

Yes yes yes, I am well aware of that, but setting an icon file up is way more complex than sticking a file called "Icon" in the folder, there are a couple of things to do first. The folder itself has several attributes (we call them flags) that specify how it should be handled. The main one that affects the appearance is the 'Has Custom Icon' flag. This MUST be set if it has a custom icon, and should NOT be set if it doesnt. If you manually deleted the icon (rather than from the Get Info window), chances are that the Custom Icon flag is still set. To remove this and have the system recreate the icon file and all the correct attributes you must first remove the flag. To do this you use ResEdit (not Resourcerer AFAIK) to Get Info on the folder, then you uncheck the Has Custom Icon box. After this you should be able to paste the icon into the Finders Get Info, which will then recreate the invisible Icon file and all the flags needed. You can then use resedit on this file. Follow this and you'll be fine, if it doesnt work then something deaper than the creator/type is wrong.

NB I would suggest removing and Icon file you created from the folder first.
