    • pilot file editor beta testers wanted

I fully expect PFE to reach beta status tonight. I'm interested in finding people willing to test PFE.

If you're interested, post a reply with your email and I'll get in touch with you tonight.

    • I volunteer. You may have a bad image of me because of some wierd posts on the EV Nova board, but I'm sure you've also seen I can be serious. I have notions of programming in Applescript, C and derivatives, BASIC, HTML 4(he) as well as Java.

I'm interested as long as you don't require a script/code proof instead of a strict user interface/functionnality test.

One 's' only, as usual. I'm only half pessimistic 😛

    • /me raises hand

Is it for EVO only or will EV pilots work as well ('cause I don't like EVO very much :-))?
Well, my time is limited and I don't know much about programming but I'd like to have a look at it.

    • I would like to be a tester. I don't have any programing knowlage, but I have a lot of time on my hands, to play games and such.

Hey Marko. If you're the same Marko I'm thinking of, your pilot file offset reseach really helped with both PFE2 and now with 3. Kudos.

As far as working with EV: won't happen. While I agree that the storyline/universe that came with EV is far superior to the one that came with EVO, the EVO engine is much nicer (I personally play EV via the EVC plugins). It would take quite a bit or rewriting to make PFE3 work with both EV and EVO pilot files (and by extension, data files and plugins), so I'm inclined not to do it. :frown:

Huh. How the hell did I get over 400 posts. I don't talk that much, do I?

    • Whoopiee! Cool, I got some credits! Thank you very much, I didn't know that I was of that much help. 🙂

This script, you wrote before, did never run with my machine but PFE3 does and it seems to work. Last evening, I just wanted to have a look at the GUI-design, and then I just wanted to know what's behind all these buttons... and then I realized that my pilot didn't fit with the plug-in... and then... and then it was 2:30 am 😉

Ok, there is a problem with the comm-window (app had to quit) and some strange numbers but I'll collect some more and send you a mail.

Regarding EV, if it's a lot of work, skip it. I don't know what EVC is, but I heared something about a plug-in to simulate the EV environment... hey Watson, would you agree that this "C" could mean "Classic"?

In case someone (who does not test the app) reads this: my Transporter has about 6 turrets and Voinian armor, so this programm actually works, I guess 😉

      Greets,
      - Marko

    • I'll beta test. And send you an e-mail about it.

Will you be putting out a manual of some type? I cannot seem to get the earlier pilot editor to work fully and there is no explanation.

If by "earlier" you mean PFE2b, I think that is destined for the scrap-heap and will only be used as a convenient source of applescript snippets for myself. It was simply too slow.

I've heard some people say they couldn't get it to work, but have been unable to reproduce the problem myself. The error messages sent to me sound like 1 of 2 things: either the person is running a version of applescript that is too old for some of the commands I use, or the person has not put the applescript extensions in the correct place.

I haven't heard of PFE3b not working on anyone's machine yet. There are still some bugs (one I'd consider major, the rest minor), but it's ok.

Sorry. As I said in this thread, I've enough. Thanks, though.

    • Besides known problems, one I've seen (and explained):
"The outfits and ships have no description!" I said when I first use PFE 3.0b. But one of my in-built plugs has 2 outfits, with their description shown in PFE 3.0b! And I found why: in my plug, the outfits and the descs are in the same file, whereas the descs of EVO are in Data 1 and the ships and outfits in Data 2. It's the most probable reason.

And an idea to "test" PFE 3.0: take a pilot file, then duplicate it, then open the copy and, without touching anything, save. Then compare the original and the copy. Theorically there should be no differences at all. By opening afterwards with ResEdit I found some, but I don't know what they link to. Maybe you'll be able to know.

      Kepp working,

I'm confused. Outfits and ships have no descriptions? Does this happen when you run PFE3 without plugins, i.e. just the data files? In all my test cases (just data files, Babylon 5 TC, Magma) ships, outfits, weapons, and escorts have all had the correct descriptions.

This is a bug no one has mentioned....

Can you send me more specific info?

I have a nice little program called "ResCompare". It opens up two files you specify and compares the resources in each, showing differences in red. I've been using this to test PFE. There is definitely a problem with how PFE saves the rating. There are a few other intentional changes PFE makes so I can track some things.

      Nice reasoning, though.

    • I think there is no desc because both my data files are locked (for security resons).
No, I've just tried to unlock them, it's not the reason.
Without plugs, there are descs. Maybe a bug in one of them.
      (trying)
Multiple in-developpement plugs are causing this problem. I'll try and see what they have particular.
      Keep working!
