    • Gun Platform

How would you make a gun platform in space. The closest I could think of was to have a ship with: Acceleration = 0 Speed = 0 Turning = 0. And then make a dude that appears in the specific system with that ship as itself.

How would you go about making it possible to land though (making it a space station that defends itself!)? If it's not possible, fine, I'll just make a platform orbiting it and have it function as a defense structure.

Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for pestering the board with all these questions, I hope it'll be the last.

    • Cant do it. You can in Nova, though.

Oh, okay. I guess I'll just make a defense platform orbiting it.

    • You kind of can - Remember beyond the crescent when you had to destroy the crescent station...

You have to make a ship that has as you said :

      Quote

      **
      Acceleration = 0 Speed = 0 Turning
      **

and have a station or defence platform spin pict. If you wanted it to look like a gun then you could give the turning a value then it would look like it was turning to target your ship.

Yeah, but it wouldn't be able to turn.

    • Think about the Gun Platforms used in The Frozen Heart. Though they've been classed as warships and they hyper in and then drift (its kind of funny to see). And whats even better is that you can BUY one of those things in the game. I'm not making fun of the plug 'cause I do love it (It's a truly wonderful piece of work). See ya. 😄 😄 😄

    • A neat trick would be that it had 0 speed, 0 acceleration, whatever turning, but it had the sprite of a station. Put it in the actual station's defense fleet, then when you demand tribute from that station, it actually looks like the station is firing on you!

Gun platforms would be nice...I've seen them in "Forzen Heart". Maybe if you learn how, I'll make you a graphic for a gun platform so we can use it in "The Dreden War."

    • You should make it have no fuel too, i.e. it has a jump value of 0. If you have the FROZEN HEART plug, take a look at the gun platforms to see how to design yours.

Well I just looked at how "Beyond the Crescent" did it. And good idea for fuel = 0.

So I'd have a station with a defense fleet of 1 which is the gun platform so that when you demand tribute it looks like it's attacking you? That's quite clever.

Clever is the word. It constantly amazes me how people can fool computers, or atleast games. 🙂

    • Actually, set fuel to 1 (or anything less than 100), not zero - zero fuel can go wiggy at times. And remember that that won't stop a computer controlled ship from jumping. Also, don't rely on zero speed and zero accel to keep a ship stationary; any weapon with an impact will eventually move the thing. You might want to try zero speed and nonzero accel, though I can't recall the exact results of doing so.

    • Heh, fool the computer, I like that.

I remember, there was a plug for the original EV, I have no idea how this guy did it, but he made defence targets on planets as part of the defence forces. They were little red reticules that shot energy weapons at you. Perhaps you could take a look at that. I think it was called Planetary Defenses or something.

Well, if you think about it computers can really be pretty stupid, and at the same time terribly smart. 🙂

    • You could (either) make a ship with an invisible sprite (use an all black mask) or use a ship with no sprite at all (I think that it'll just put a reticle on screen with no picture). That way, when the ships exit the planet (or station), you won't get double images.

    • But you need to remember that you'll be firing at the station, a concept that EV-players are not used to.

Here's an idea: Make it have fuel = 1, but design a fuel scoop that actually sucks fuel (make the fuel increase a negative number) and make that fuel sucker a standard item, so the platform won't be "wiggy" but it can't jump either.
