    • ShipWrite problem...

Greetings! I was wandering if someone could help me with a problem I'm having...I've been working on a plugin of my own, designed in ShipWrite. However, every time I try testing the plug in Override, the game has an error and quits. Now I asked my brother about the problem, who has had plugin experience, and he said that problem usually occurs when just a small (and hard to find) cliche has not been corrected. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem? I had already completed one ship for the plug, which ran absolutely fine in Override. Then I went on to make the second ship, and the plug stopped loading in Override. Anyone know what's the problem? Thanks in advance! 🙂

    • I believe you ment wondering, not wandering 😉

As for your problem, well, it could be caused by any number of things. Memory errors, recource id# conflicts and incorrect formatting can all cauce EV to crash on startup. I'm sorry I cant be more helpful, but I would suggest looking in the EV bible. You might find the answer in there.

Thanks for your help...I've never read the EV Bible, but I'll go look for it now. It's in the EV downloads, right?

    • Myabe you've already done this, but make sure to check every little thing in Shipwrite. Maybe you forgot to fill in one field, or something like that.

      Alright, I'll try that also.

    • More likely than not, the problem is a bad Spin resource. Your spin is pointing to a sprite or mask that isn't there. That's the only error I've ever had that caused EV/O to quit with the "Out of Memory" error.

And reading the EV/O Bible is extremely helpful. I can't recommend it enough.

    • If it's an out of memory error, try giving it more memory.

Well, I know the ShipWrite is atleast seeing my spin resources...The ship I was working on was rather large, and in ShipWrite inside the spin window, I could see my ship spinning around, so I know for a fact that ShipWrite was seeing my sprite and mask. Could it be the graphic that's the problem?

Also BattleDoctor, I've never had problems opening Override until I tried opening my plugin. Then it brought up the "Out of Memory" error, and quit. Should I still try giving it more memory anyway?

    • Try giving it a bunch more memory. When it says "Out of Memory" for the error, I would start by giving it more memory, and then work from there.

Ok, I tried what you advised, but I still had the same problem. I think what I'm going to have to is delete the plugin and start from scratch. It's gotta be a problem with the plugin / ShipWrite. Is there any other plugin development program that you all would recommend besides ShipWrite? All I've heard about EV Edit is bugs, bugs, and even more bugs...

Before you trash all of your work, I would recommend opening the plug in ResEdit and confirming that the spins are pointing to legitimate graphics.

9 times out of 1 the problem you're describing is Spin-related and has nothing whatsoever to do with the amount of memory you've allocated to EV/O.

And what you've heard about EV-Edit is largely accurate. Have you tried "The Docks"? I've never used it, but it's another ship editor that was posted to the Add-ons section recently.

    • I can't help youdirectly with the problem, but the "Out of Memory" error that you are getting now, probably isn't caused by EVO being out of memory. Don't delete the WHOLE plug, delete the ship that made this come up, then try it again, if it still doesn't work, then I can't help you beyond that.

Another thing sparked my curiosity Skyblade. You're using ShipWrite. You made a ship. The ship works. Is it being used by the AI? I've been working on a ship plug for a LONG time, and I can't get the blasted AI to use it!!!!!!!!

    • The problem is almost certainly a spin resource bug, as was mentioned above. EVO 1.0.2 really should have fixed that error message.

    • The Docks is on par in quality with Shipwrite which is a wonderful program and I've never had any problems with it (open your plug in ResEdit and see if there are any missing resources). Also, make sure you have the latest version of ShipWrite. But if ShipWrite keeps giving you problems then download The Docks, then get rid of all your ShipWrite files (preferences included) and download the latest version of ShipWrite and then try it, but till ShipWrite works use The Docks, it is just as good (though you can't see where the offsets are in The Docks, but you can still do all the things ShipWrite does).

Hmmm...Well, I know my graphics and spin resources are there, I'm just wandering why Override won't except them. Do the graphics have to be a certain quality or something? I don't have any idea! :frown:

    • In order to get the AI to use a ship, you need to set a düde resource and then tell a s˙st to use that resource. If you want to create a special ship that you need to kill, you would set a përs resource and have it go along with a mission bit. It sounds really complicated but if you look it up in the EVO Bible it gets simple really fast.

Ok, thanks. Every bit of information helps...I've been reading the EVO bible, so that's making plugin programming much easier for me.

    • Woah! Making a dude resource isn't enough? NO WONDER!!!! Maybe I can finally release this blasted thing! THANKS!!

BTW, Skyblade, did you get everything working again?

    • I think I have your problem figured out Skyblade. But first, a question: Did you change some ship id #'s in Shipwrite? If you did, you still might have some spďns that reference non existant PICT resources and that would cause EV to lock up. This is what happened to me. For more info, see the topic I posted asking for help with the plug. 😄
