    • Creating A Level From Scratch

Has anyone created a level from scratch. I mean from scratch. Grow your wheat, kneed the dough, bake the bread scratch.

If you did any of the following, you didn't make it from scratch:
()copy and paste level and world info fields into your level from a pre existing level
      (
)Copy a pre-existing level, delete all tiles and sprites, and create your map

I'm interested because Ben did it...so there must be a way. I'm just wondering what the steps are.

PS: Does anyone have a good resource for what all the fields do in all the dialog boxes? Thanks. 🙂

I Do! I Do! here are the steps:
      1: think of your level
      2: add tiles
      3: add water or acid
      4: add objects
      5:add save points
      6: add exerons
      7: add enemies.
its not THAT hard, I mean I'm doing it as we speak er... read
      thanks for the question!

That's because being the programmer, he knew exactly what each thing did.

      Three words: MASCOT Reference Guide

      ------------------
Measuring energy in kilowatt-hours is as stupid as measuring distance in knot-seconds.

    • Yeah I suppose your right...it just seems awkward to try and make everything fit proporly using bits and pieces of old levels. The joy of unsupported software. 🙂

Oh well...I'll keep workin on it. I actually did know about the guide...it's just that oh I don't know...maybe its too complex? Burnum sits down and starts desifering each tidbit of information in the guide.

I guess I was sort of hoping for someone to create a level by scratch...so I don't have to fuss around with different size levels and PxBack and PxMid tiles. They never seem to work out right when I try to use data from the original level, but my level is a different size. Has anyone done a good job of using these on custom levels? How...please share. I've read the FAQs and guide...but I still get headaches over it.

And on an unrelated note altogether...I can never get the scale for my PICT FG Map to come out right. I know 1 px = 1 tile...but when I draw a map it either comes out too small or too big. In theory, would drawing my map scalling it up to 3200% change the size of the drawing to what I want in a 1:1 ratio, then scalling it down to 32% get me the right size?

      That's odd.
      CAn you give more details?

    • I'll try.

I can't think up my levels from scratch on the small sizes they have to be, so I norm try to make them how I'd want to see them I was playing the level, trim the graphic and then size it down to something I would see on the map key in MASCOT.

I can never get the porportions right. My latest level, it came out 4x the size it was supose to be. I decided that was cool and named it Giants Cauldron, but I don't want all my levels to be huge. I think the org size was 512x384 and I scaled it down to 256x192. Other times, my graphics that look good, when I scale them down, Ferazel can't get through some of the pasages and I have to edit it in MASCOT a lot. I wish there was a formula for converting actual size grapnics to MASCOT size or a suggested px by px graphic size range to use to get good results.

      On another note,
When you draw your maps in graphics programs. Do you just fill up the pict with black and fidle around with the eraser until you produce something that looks cool? My levels seem so simple, I can't think of my level in the big picture and try to make good maps. It's easier than hand laying tiles, but harder to think up ideas.
Anyone want to write out the steps that normally happen between blank page and MASCOT?

Don't scale them down, make them the size you want when you're designing them!

      Yeah. Or the pencil tool.
      That's the hardest part.
If it was easy, I'd have made over 100 levels by now.

You mean keeping in mind the 1px:1tile ratio? Making it in real size would make the levels huge. I can just see it now...Ferazel starts walking...hours later Ferazel comes to first enemy.
