    • Max. Spob Size

I know this was figured out a while ago, but I forgot what was determined as the max. spob size.. I know it has to be at least 300x300 because I've got one huge-ass planet at that size and it works fine. If it anybody knows, it would be a help.

    • I always assumed it was 640 x 480, as the EVO Bible says 'don't create sprites that are wider or taller than the smallest screen size Override can use (640x480) because there's not enough offscreen buffer room to load it all in.' I haven't had any first-hand experience with giant planets, though, so I can't say for sure.

    • This may make me sound dumb, but I'm gonna say it anyway... I think I heard someone say that there was no max size for the spobs, and that they could be infinite. This is probably wrong, but I figured I would post it anyway...

i think thats right though i don't think many people will want a planet that big in a plug. to make it even bigger make each of them just be a piece of the planet. you could make a 4 times bigger(?)

    • Yes, but if you did that, wouldn't you have 4 different ports to land on (I'm assuming you mean for each planet slot to put 1/4 of the planet picture in and have them all lined up). Then you'd get problems when you try to select it to land (the green box would cut through the planet! ahh!! 🙂 )

Finally, wouldn't that take up a huge amount of memory to load it. Ugh, I wouldn't want to think about how the game would perform for those slower machines 😉

 OMG, I just got a cool idea! What if you used that to make different "ports" on a planet? Yes, I know Martin did something similar with FH and FF (By overlapping spöbs), but this would be a little more realistic because you'd see an actual segment of the planet selected. You could make planets with up to four different landing areas!

Nope, you are correct, you are entirely wrong. Sorry. 🙂

    • Eh, that statement made NO sense to me. 😉

I'd assume planets can be bigger than 300x300 (potentially) considering I've successfully flown a 480x480 white circle test ship... 😄

    • You could also make each section have a spaceport or city picture on the pict to make it look like 4 starports/cities.

I probably should put some witty remark here. But I won't.

You are correct. I asked Matt Burch the other day on #ev3 and he saidthat Spob size was infinite.

    • Now lets move on. What is the largest size one should put in a plug.

I put a 256x256 into Mille Terrae. Is that going to slow down the game? It dosn't seem so big to me.

Let me put it this way: All of the spöbs in EV/O never went beyond a certain size (Find out for yourself what it is; I'm too lazy to do it). Don't you think there's a reason for that?

this was done in a plug. though it wasn't cities but just one part of the planet that you needed to land on. it was in a plug called Mugabi(?can't remember..) and Destiny. and a 'for her' version.

Probably because Peter Cartwright and Matt Burch didn't want really big spöbs in their scenarios...

I wonder if Meowx is doing something similar to this with Dark Realms. I saw a screenshot of it, and the ships and such were flying around on actual terrain, as opposed to the star background of regular EV/O.

      ------------------

    • That was an idea I had though it would probably be around 50 megs or more just for one spob. Maybe in Nova, where backgrounds are costomizable...

      ------------------
Is the answer to this question 'no'?

    • Well now Bomb has shown that the max Spob size is now 2496x2000. Go to (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/webboard/Forum9/HTML/001234.html#")His Topic(/url) to see it.

A very good reason indeed, see the comunication thingy doesn't scale the pictures, and it uses the actual planet sprite. so when you have something bigger then so and so (i think its something like 92x85), it cuts it off so you only see a little of the planet (i think its the upper right edge that it centers it on so you only see that) i guess matt just didn't want to recode that little part.....
