    • Captain Orne's ?deleted? thread

      All-

Yesterday (30 Oct 00) I was reading a thread about the search for a mysterious "Nova app." The thread was started by Captain Orne and eventually included the url of a site that had a compressed file called "EV Nova.sit".

Thinking it was a joke or intentionally misleading post, I of course checked it out and discovered that it appeared to be genuine. After looking though some of the stuff in the package (templates, bible, application. Nothing else), I replied to the original post asking how something like this could have been allowed to happen, and how the compressed file was found in the first place.

To my dismay, the thread appears to have disappeared; I can only assume it was deleted. :frown:

While I can totally understand why ATMOS/Ambrosia don't want people to get their hands on pre-release copies of EVN, I still would like to know how something like this happened. Whould anyone at ATMOS/Ambrosia care to comment?

And to anyone interested is seeing the stuff I shouldn't have been able to see: Though most of what I read in the rough draft of the EVN Bible has been mentioned on the EVN update log, out of respect of the work being done by Ambrosia and ATMOS I will not send out copies of the stuff I've seen, nor will I participate in the EVN speculation threads. Don't ask me to send you copies of stuff.

So, again, would anyone at ATMOS/Ambrosia care to comment?

      -STH

      PS: I hope I don't get banned

Hmmm. You might be correct. I am actually not sure who started the thread....

I just did a search. If you do a serach for "nova app" Capt'n O's name is listed.

Regardless, I'm still curious to know what happened.

Cotton Mouse(or Moose) started the topic asking where to find the NOVA app and then he found himself and put the URL which made you go there and download it (i did it too), and my name comes here as I was probably the last to reply to that post before being deleted.

This was surely a security breach and I hope not being banned too.

      Thanks for the clarification. 🙂

    • I got it (the app/bible/templates) and the plugin (was at their old site, with similar circumstances). I think it would be interesting to try the two together, but the version of Nova (plug)I have doesn't have any of the new resources/changes, so it might not work. I still think that the current plug format pales in comparison to something like QuakeC, and anyone who wants make a QuEV (multiplayer, 3d engine) can go and do it fairly easily. I think I will try, but by no means leave it to me.

    • The thread was deleted because we don't know how the app got there. We're still looking at that. It may well be a hack.

Can I ask any and all that downloaded the app to delete it? It's not yours; please don't keep it. It's not like legal proceedings are in the offing, but it does violate intellectual property laws, and I'd be very grateful.

      all the best,

    • heh. If cotton mouse posted to a web link, then either he got it or someone else got it. If the former, I doubt it, if the latter, it's a hack or a leak. It's out there, it'll stay out there. If I see it anywhere, however, I will ask the relevent admins to remove it.

And another note: IP is a very tricky issue...

I hope that we're kept up-to-date as to what happened. I find this interesting. If this was a hack, at least they got a compiled application and not the source-code. Can you imagine the damage the source-code could do to the profit margin?

Part of me wants to keep these things so I can later compare this illegal-release with the final release; it'd just be interesting to see how things changed. Then there is the part of me that strongly supports intellectual property. I suppose you could consider this leak a developer pre-release (because there're no data files, but the bible and templates are present, allowing people to start playing with the potential plug ideas).... In the end the statement "It's not yours; please don't keep it," is totally correct.

Out of respect for everyone working on EVN, I'll delete what I've downloaded :frown:
