Is there anywhere I can use more than the basic 256 colors?

Not in EV or EVO, but in EV3, definitely -- you can use 16 bit or 32 bit color (for the static pictures).

i once wasted hours cause i accidently took the time to render graphics in 32bit color although some people do that purposely.

J.Ace--I've never been able to put that kind of time into it, even when I wanted to. It's easier just to steal someone else's graphics, I'm afraid.

depending on how more complex the plug-in developing will be, then, I might just wait for EV3. That's the nice thing about just being in the conceptual phase. you don't have to pretend to yourself that anything has to get done.

It takes just as long to render something in 32 bits as in 8 bits. Actually, it's insignificantly faster in 32-bit.
