Is Mechanisto the best program for making spins? Don't worry Type11, I'm just interested

    • It's not necessarily the best, but's it's relatively straightforward.

    • I wouldn't trust any work to Mechanisto, honestly. The UI is completely bassackwards and inelegant. The rendering speed and shaders are...not so good. If your machine can support it, get Strata3D. If you have an older Mac and want some speed and power, hit Hotline and try and pick up a copy of StrataVision 3D 5.0. (These are two completely different programs)

And what's this? foo12 telling someone to pirate software from Hotline? Yes. For a few months, strata started giving away Vision 3D to anyone that wanted it; I think they even put a copy on a MacAddict CD-ROM. However I think they stopped distributing it when they started giving away Strata3D (aka StudioPro without IK, radiosity, and powermodule1). This is stupid. Keep giving it away and disclaim any resonsibility for support, other than to laugh in someone's face if they call tech support. (Okay, Strata wouldn't do this as their tech support people are EXTREMELY nice and helpful.)

I feel the need to support Mechanisto here. Admittedly it sometimes does things which make want to inflict serious damage on my computer (which wouldn't be fair, I know... so I restrain myself!), but considering the generally poor quality of the documentation, the fact that people have taught themselves to use it in a couple days or even hours has to be worth something. And it can make some pretty impressive ships. Rendering speed is bad, but I have no complaints about the shaders. And, it works on my computer, which is more than can be said for Strata3D. And the price is right.

      I say, go for it!

(And when I find something better and throw away Mechanisto in disgust I'll let you know.)

Mechanisto is good and easy. I've had no problems with it, curious to why you guys do... It can do a lot of complex stuff it you give it some time and learn it. Shaders are excellent in comparison to most expensive programs...seriously now. It might have its limtations, such as limited reflections and limited lighting, but it can make a good ship. I've done some great stuff with it...just check the page under the sig. Anyways...PEACE YO!

    • I'm not sure I could go as far as to say Mechanisto is "Good and Easy," but despite its awful interface and major bugs, it can yield decent results. Be prepared to take some time to learn: I scrapped 4 out of 5 of my first ships I was going to keep after I found I could do better.
