Sorry if this is a repeat - I looked but couldn't find this exact q in the forums.

I know that to get the symbol I need to go to High Garendall. But (Thanks to the boards) I know I need to go to the elf first (which begs the question, how would I have found that out without the boards? But I digress). But when I do, the only thing I can ask is "are you an elf?", which seems to displease him, and he tells me to go away.

What am I missing?!? It's driving me nuts!!

Yep, you do need to go to the learning tree first. You probably have the quest "Orders"
in your quest log, which means you need to go into the tree and look up "orders" in the
great book. After which you will need to look up the entry "Order of Seasons" which
will place the "Order of Seasons" quest into your quest log. This mission will allow
you to ask the elf pertinent questions to begin his quests.
