    • Cracking EVO

Dont WORRY! I am not talking about doing it for some evil purpose! 🙂

I wondered if someone has been able to crack the data fork (using ResEdit or that other editor... :p) to change the limits on parts of EVO.

When the game was designed, the apps was given limits to save its resources from overloading on to many ID#s. Thus giving us only 256 missions, 64 ships and so on...

Well does anyone know where (if possible) in the data fork we may be able to change it, if so.. would Ambrosia be upset if a 'special' EVO application was sent with plugs to increase these numbers?

    • What a great idea... I don't think it would work though. I'm sure somebody would have done it by now 🙂

Probably the case... In any case, ASW would have probably done it in V1.0.1 -- mind you, I can edit the comms messages that you get to warn you taht you are too close to the system center... ('bout the only thing I can do though!!)

ResEdit and Resourcerer are resource fork editors, not data fork editors.

    • Gah. J'fool, Resorcerer can edit data forks out of the box via the <DF> resource, and there's a nifty utility called (url="http://"http://207.208.148.74/files/forker13.hqx")"forker"(/url) that you can plop in your extensions folder to make ResEdit do exactly the same thing.

Data fork editing can pretty much change any hard-coded message in EV, so long as you keep the number of characters the same (for example, when Skyhawk and co. were still trying to get Xenocide to work in the EVO engine, we were going to change Max "Guns" into "Alpha" class hardpoints and "Turrets" into "Beta" class hardpoints. However, since Alpha was longer than "Guns", we swapped them. Thusly, "Guns" became "Beta" and "Turrets" became "Alpha " (with two spaces at the end to make up the difference)) If you want to distribute a data fork hack, you could use (url="http://"http://207.208.148.74/files/rescompare.bin")ResCompare(/url), but Ambrosia frowns heavily on it. They threatened legal action on the Xenocide Dev team when Logic squealed on us.

(sigh... two more posts to go...)

    • You may be able to change things like text, but changing the limits is a bunch of work if you do have the source code, but if you don't its much harder as you have to change multiple things.

    • You can edit data forks with Super ResEdit...I think

    • And where pray tell might this 'Super ResEdit' that you speak of be?

      Does it cost money?

      ------------------

    • Super ResEdit's a bust, mike. It's 2.1.3 with some minor hacks and a vers resource change. It might incorporate the forker extension, but then again, maybe not.

      How've you been, anyway?

ps. If you feel like unlimbering your famous 'banter & brawl' skills, there's a lovely lad over in the EV banter & brawl board called TooL that you've got to see to believe. Have fun; don't be too gentle with him...
