    • Organizing Plug-ins in the addons page

Someone brought up this subject before I think, but I was unable to find it in the webboard ever since the search option was down (I don't know why it was down, my computer was in a coma at that time).

I still believe that this idea of giving accounts users such as myself the ability to replace the plug-ins that are already in the addons page with updated ones will save space and stuff and prevent the page from generating redundant plug-ins.

I know that there are plug-ins that I created I certainly most want to remove or replace, because they either don't work at all or I improved them.

And I certainly don't expect the updated plug-ins to show up in the front page everytime it gets updated. What matter is that it has been improved, that's all. I don't care if I updated a plug-in called ie. "Ship Plug-in version 1.0" with version 2 and it ends up in the back page.

Remember, the moderators still decide whether or not plug-ins will pass the submission test.

Although we can do little or nothing for those who submits plug-ins unregistered to the board, at least this idea is still an improvement. It's better for both sides, moderators and account users.

Should we push for this idea?

    • I am assuming that we are all for this cause no one has replied to this thread. If there is any other reason why this idea should not go, then post your explanations here.

I certainly agree- however I'm not sure how it would be implemented so anyone could access files they uploaded. The system is currently very rigid- as a mod here I don't have any access to the EVO files- those lay in the hands of the "web site admins" who are listed as Chamrin, Micah L, soviet mikee and EVula, I believe. I'll bring it up to the powers that be to see if we can at least get the power into the hands of those who will actually do something with it.

    • The system can be implimented in similar ways that people submits flash files to (url="http://"http://www.newgrounds.com")www.newgrounds.com(/url).

Important note on that website. Newgrounds runs under Tom Fulp, Wade Fulp, LilJim, and very few other moderators. Yet, flash movies get submitted in the thousands almost everyday, that's more than what gets submitted on Ambrosias' combined addons. Not a day goes by where not a single flash ever gets submitted.

So in other words, there are several people running this juggernaut website. Ambrosia which I know for sure has more people than newgrounds running this one.

Im sure if you ask Tom about how his automatic system can be implimented to what I am suggesting, then this endeavor will not be impossible.

    • I'm in total agreement that the addons section needs a complete overhaul, it just wasn't built in such a way that makes updating things easy.

If you haven't heard, Tom went back to England so setting a new system up may be a little more difficult. The bottom line is, somebody's going to either have to program a decent one, or find one on the web, probably it will have to be licensed or something.

If this gets implemented, I think it should be interfaced directly with the web board user database, and only allow submissions from registered users, this will probably cut down on the numerous "cheat" plugs that only do one thing, if they work at all. Since all users are required to have a valid email to create an account, feedback can be easily sent to submitters who forget something or such like that. Additionally, having a comments thread (formatted differently on the addons page, but still uses the UBB system underneath) so that people not only can rate the submission, but also talk about problems they have with it specifically.

Since user accounts are protected by password, it can make uploading an update easy, it would still go through mod approval (and there would be ways around uploading updates if you use a different account later, the mods would take care of that).

But of course the key issue is, someone needs to do it, and I'm not aware of anyone working on this project right now.

      Chamrin

    • There have been a number of plug-ins that don't even work at all (mostly due to downloading formats). There are even some that are practically less than 1k that are actually in the addons sections. How they managed to get in there? I don't know.

Take for example, Colors in Space, which is abourt 157k. I tried to download that, but all it did was open a new browser window for me and all this random gibberish spat out. Nothing was ever downloaded on my hard drive.

As for Tom going back to England? That's news to me, I've been freqenting newgrounds, but nothing mentioning him going to England. "going back to England" implies that he actually lives there. Tom Fulp lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Are you sure you're talking about "the" Tom Fulp and not some other guy by the same first name?

    • I believe the "Tom" that Chamrin was referring to is Tom (TomWoozle) Anthony, the Ambrosia (ex?) webmaster.

And I totally agree as well that the addons pages (for all of the Escape Velocity games) needs something done to bring them up to date (in more ways than one).

    • the last up date was Cold Fusion on 7/6/2003, don't tell my there are no new addons about.

Last update? I'm not aware of any previous version of Cold Fusion being added on before. I assume that the plug-in you're talking about is the first Cold Fusion plug-in released hence the version number 1.0.0,
