Eyes of Fire
Chapter 5: The Spiders
An air taxi hummed along through the main airways of Kaystra, capital of the Alliance. The black paint of the vehicle gleamed in the bright sunlight of the day and reflected the cheerful yellows and reds and browns of the surrounding foliage. Its occupants were in sharp contrast to their environment. Ek Daal, clad in his usual dark green robes woven with his zelja threads of rank, was cooly smoking a Kayan cigarette, a habit he'd picked up from Kon soon after taking power on Kayia. The general himself was there, resplendent in the uniform of a Death Commando Marshal, which was his second legitimatealthough highly secrettitle. Arza was wearing the dull green of the Alliance, interwoven with the brilliant patterns of her rank, and her hand was idly running up and down the dull edge of a saber, the traditional baton of authority for a colonel.
The taxi decelerated and landed in front of a pair of iron gates with a sign hanging from them that read "ALEPH CAMP, REDSWORD MOUNTAINS". Arza vaulted the side of the taxi and waited impatiently for Zathe and Kon. The general, rushing to meet up with the angry colonel, swore as he tripped on the door of the taxi, but he caught his balance in time with an outstretched hand. Zathe calmly walked out of the taxi, making no overt effort to hurry as he tipped the driver and inclined his head. The loyal soldier smiled and saluted his leader, and then drove off.
"So this is the base camp for our green troops?"
"Hardly green, Zathe my friend," intoned a muscular Strandless. "Come on inside. The troops are ready for inspection," he continued, idly caressing the red bands of rank on his black uniform, identical to Kon's in every respect, including rank.
Chiyohae?
Aye sir, replied the Strandless. Its been a while.
Indeed it has.
If you will follow me?
As the four walked through the gates to the training compound, ek Daal painted an expression of casual interest on his face to mask the turbulent thoughts crashing through his head. Chiyohae, more commonly known as Chiy, was as much of a legend as Zathe was, but for completely different reasons, mostly. The burly Strandless had trained almost every single ship commander and death commando on Kayia over the fifty years of his occupation as Alliance military instructor. At one point during that, however, he had served under ek Daals command in the Battle of the Belt. In a desperate gamble, Zathe had led his crescent fighter squadron against one of the three warships the Mavs renegades had sent against them. In the hellish firefight that followed, Zathes strict discipline had meshed with Chiys training to give the squadron a distinct edge over the onboard fighters of the warship. While those had been dispatched quickly, the warship itself refused to destruct until half of Zathes squadron had gone with it. Still, it was a victory, and it had given Arza enough time to take out the second warship on her own. The third had retreated, its commander demonstrating a rare piece of intelligence in a renegade.
The dusty path they trod wove its way higher into the mountains, and they passed the fortifications and arsenals that were placed periodically across the trail. Several platoons of soldiers were training at each one, and all snapped to attention and saluted crisply when the group of commanders walked by. Zathe always returned the salute for camaraderieif not for loyalty-breeding as well. Soon they had arrived at the huge parade grounds in front of the main command structure, located at the top of Redsword Plateau Aleph. A million troops had arrayed themselves there in a standard Alliance mass rally. Each wore the dark green of the Alliance with a bandolier of fusion grenades across it. Each wore a polished conical helmet emblazoned with the warship-and-star emblem of the Alliance. Each carried a phase assault rifle with extra power cells arrayed across a utility belt. Each had the same look in his or her eyes, the look of confidence that came with a sense of power and strength to those who could survive Chiys training. But a few of them stood out. Some of them didnt look at Zathe and Arza and Kon with puerile admiration. Some of them studied them, sizing them up for strengths and weaknesses, for ways they could learn from them.
Armies of the Alliance, began Zathe, soon we shall stop the injustices done by the Unobot Theocracy and the Mavs Renegade Coalition. He looked out over the entire audience, but ek Daal only made eye contact with the last group of soldiers, the ones who showed the first fledgling signs of command potential. Maybe theyll be ship commanders one day, he thought absently. Well need more of them once Voltok finishes. By now the cheering had subsided, so he went on.
The criminal rulers of Obutes have committed acts of genocide against their own people: 100 million have died in the past seven weeks. We shall put a stop to this!
The pirates of Mavs have plundered neutral Miranu vessels in direct violation of the Gadzair Convention and the Code of Akrayhek. We shall deal out justice!
The Unobot Theocracy refuses to respect the rights of its citizens and expunges all hope of a better life in its system. We shall teach the Obutans the meaning of an efficient lifestyle!
The Coalition has for too long built up its fleets since the Battle of the Belt. We shall make that construction project a vain effort on the part of the renegades!
Obutes leaders have given up their claim to honor in this universe! Mavs captains have long since strangled what morals they once held! Bakoom needs our protection from the monsters that claim mastery of the rebels. Let the banners of the Alliance be a light unto these nations! Let them see what can be accomplished if every citizen is judged solely by the content of his character and the merits of his efforts! For the Alliance!
Zathe raised his phase assault rifle up with one arm; his allies and the million soldiers in front of him did so as well. The plateau was no longer an inanimate geographical location, but a writhing mass of fanatically loyal and justice-seeking soldiers all cheering and applauding and raising their weapons in salute to their leader.
Hours later, they returned to the Green Tower. A military clerk walked up to the Supreme Commander and saluted. Zathe returned the salute and took the datapad with a nod to the secretary. He motioned for the others to follow him into the main conference chamber, and he placed the datapad into a displayer, setting it to project in three dimensions above the circular table that dominated the room. They looked impassively at the Azdgari transmission.

I have contacted you on behalf of the great Azdgari race. We would like to gain knowledge about the universe and survive on our plot of galactic space. However if we feel you are a threat your civilizations military will feel the full wrath of the mighty Azdgari race. Supreme Commander Zathe ek Daal smiled. He looked over at Kon but said nothing, just held his gaze.
What? the general asked irritably. After Zathe continued to look at him, Kon said uncomfortably, So the Azdgari want to throw their weight around. They wont see us as a threat, especially once we get our cloaks on the fleet. I see no reason not to accept their offer.
I concur, stated Colonel Arza. Perhaps we may speak personally with an Azdgari negotiator if we allow right of passage. Also, it would be to our strategic benefit to be allowed through their systems anyway.
Zathe nodded. Very well then. Send the following message to the Azdgari, Colonel Arza.

We agree to a ceasefire. Azdgari ships shall be allowed through Alliance space so long as they display proper IFF and Azdgari transponder codes and as long as they do not commit any act of aggression against any member of the Alliance. The same shall be so for Alliance craft traversing Azdgari territory.
Sincerely,
Supreme Commander Zathe ek Daal, Leader of the Akrayhek Alliance

You chose not to mention the idea of a conference, accused Arza.
I want to see if they have changed from the Azdgari of my ancestors time, replied Zathe. Until they do, no conference shall be called.
Then let us hope you change your mind.
Hope then that the Azdgari have become less warlike.
Bakoom System
Alright people, listen up. The voice was that of Admiral Vichama. Although Zathe wasnt present at the battle to keep him in line, he didnt need to be. Vichama, no matter what he did at this battle, could only play into Zathes hands. So he decided to do what was best for the Alliance. Were here in Bakoom to set up a protectorate for these people. The pirates and Obutes pose enough of a threat to wipe them out if we dont help them. So prime your weapons in case any renegade or hostile craft swoop in under the sensor interference that we cant filter out.
Aye sir. And what should we do if theres nothing here?
Keep on course for the planet. Well be transmitting shortly, and I want to be in orbit when I do so.
Right then.
As it happened, the ship commander had been guessing along the right lines. But he hadnt been entirely incorrect. The only ships present were an arada captained by an independent merchant and two militia crescent fighters. Or so it seemed at first. The arada fired a rocket at one of the militia ships, and followed through with a barrage of fire that surprised the militiaman. Admiral Vichama responded quickly. He ordered the Alliance force, comprised of 2 Laziras, 10 Aradas, and 7 Crescent Fighters, to attack the pirate arada. SADs and a hail of rockets and phase weaponry slammed into the shields and armor of the rogue pilots ship, and the vessel exploded as the atmosphere combusted. The militia hailed Vichamas flagship.
We appreciate the help. You want to stick around a little?
Vichama grinned. As a matter of fact, we do. Were from the Akrayhek Alliance, and were here to ask whether or not your world would like to join the Alliance. You would experience the same natural rights and free government as our people have should you accept.
Sounds good, but Ill need to ask the Geologist. Hell have an answer to you shortly.
After about an hour, which hardly seemed short to the admiral, the leader of Bakoom, Geologist Kane, was on the line. Membership with the Alliance? Yes, why not? Go ahead and land at starport nine. Well draw up the necessary treaties there.
Excellent. Thank you, and welcome to the Alliance.
Hey, so long as you keep the renegades and the cursed Unobot thugs off our backs, were fine with it.

All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.
