    • Impossible Levels

Zelda brought this up awhile ago, not as a wimp, and I thought it merited discussion. All those One Big World-ers have been making evil grins at the difficulty of their levels. A level doesn't have to be impossible to be good, quite the contrary. There is a difference between fun and annoyance. Some levels have that 'one more try' effect whereas others have that 'quit the game' result. I was wondering what you all think makes a good level. Please give examples, what was the best Ferazel's Wnad level you ever played, why?

      ------------------
Apu: Well, if the police won't help us, we'll simply have to take the law into our own hands.
Wiggum: Yeah, yeah! A lot of people are doing that these days.

    • Hear hear. A good level is one that looks good, works well, and it successfully makes you work to get from one end to the other. "Work" does not mean you're crawling there in a bloody heap about to expire; it means that you experimented, discovered, thought, whatever. That's why I don't know what to think about "The Labyrinth."

    • I feel a good level is hard one, but not too hard.
I felt Knight of Ni's second level was slightly too hard, but otherwise teriffic.

Some of my favorite origional levels are:
      The second ice one
      Western Reaches
      Unemployed in Greenland
      Manditraki Wizard
The Labyrinth (even though I did cheat and look at a map... šŸ˜„ )
      The Dig

I found Xichra's Lair way too hard.
I have not beaten it without FerazEdit.

In OBW, the hard sections (names not yet disclosed to the public :)) will be very hard.
The rest will be only slightly harder than the origional levels, I hope.
However, AVN's levels are pretty hard.
Maybe someone should test them and give feedback.

      I liked that level.

    • I like the Eastern Reaches, even if you do have to come back later to get the final secrets.
My daughter likes the Western Reaches - she enjoys the rides on the carts.

    • Labyrinth is too hard. Xichra's Lair is nearly impossible.

I think the best level in the original FW was "The Dig" it had an original idea of digging, good graphics, just the right difficulty, and was not very annoying.

With my unbiased opinion of my own levels šŸ™‚ I like "Circuit City". Mostly because of the graphics, but I like bottomless pits and the secret I put in.

I also like aschaaf's "Watch Your Step". A little too easy and short, but very good ideas. As I said before, I like bottomless pits.

Summit Plummit is good because of graphics.

Delusions of Mediocrity was too hard.

The fire level in Andrew's world was very good. Exellent use of crunch tiles and rock barriers.

And I liked Storm Valley, but it was a little too hard. Maybe with a little less wind.

And all of the levels in the Lost Mines are good, but hard! (But then, they're supposed to be, and they aren't frusterating, just difficult)

      Thanks.
One of my OBW levels will have LOADS of rock barriers.

hehe. šŸ™‚ The ones on the levels page are not done.
They were just to give the general idea of what the level was going to be like.
In the second one, if you make even one mistake (such as letting a shield goblin get you...) you're doomed. šŸ™‚

She'll love the rides in some OBW levels.
That is, if she ever gets to them...:evilgrin:
Hmm, this webboard needs an evil grin.
Maybe I should start a petition for it...

    • One of my points is: there shouldn't be an evil grin! That level with 'one hit and your doomed', I would give up! I am not a wimp, but I only have so much tolerance for mindless repition. A good way to keep a level difficult but still fun is to add lots of save points. That way the premise is the same but with less annoying repition.

Hmm, I was origionaly going to have only one save point.
      Maybe I should add more...

:::applauding:::: You go, boy! I'm hoping that all you developers want to keep your games primarily fun...too difficult to complete shouldn't be your first goal. When I play computer games it's for relaxation and FUN!!! If I'm going to be frustrated to tears, I'm not interested.

    • I agree completely, Zelda. If you really think about every single level in the Orginal Ferazel's Wand was great! Just the right combination of difficulty and fun. I aggree that the Labriynth was great so were all the cave levels and ice levels. I also really enjoyed the Dig and Parched Earth. Hm, I think I covered all the levels. šŸ™‚
