    • Lack of Respect for EVO

This just a topic to see some of your opinions on this. On both the Nova and original boards I've noticed polls on what is better Nova or EV. On every occasion however there has not been much mention Override. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to start a flame war just want to hear your opinions.

      ------------------

    • For the time it came out...

      EV > EVN > EVO

Override was...disappointing. I prefer it to EV mostly because there's more to actually do, and this colour scheme is easier on my eyes (and I joined the boards right after having played Override.)

In your eyes. I loved that huge galaxy with different types of aliens and missions for almost every faction in the game. Those comical graphics were amusing too. I was dissapointed that they reused the planet pics, but overall I found it to be an excellent game.

    • I preferred the more serious graphics of EV, and the more detailed situation.

    • for various reasons i always thought that override was best. i mean, i based my webboard name from it. if i liked ev just as much i might have been 'rebel opertive' or something. but IMHO override is best.

    • I liked Override the best because it was the first one I played.

    • Although my friend and I played EV on his Mac (well, now my Mac) back when we were in 5th grade, the first one I played extensively was EVO. I still prefer EVO to EV. EVO is, in my opinion, EV on a much larger scale. I got bored with EV fairly quick, but EVO still keeps my attention. The galaxy is wonderfully done and the missions are enthralling. It has a wider range of aliens, and much more politics between species. While EV is still a great game as well, I rank EVO a bit higher.

    • This was my first extensively played ambrosia game also, I ended up going from EVO to EV. The variety is much more expansive I think.

      ------------------

    • I much prefer EV to EVO. I was around when EVO was first announced as being in development; all of us thought that the graphics in the screenshots were just place-holders... we were wrong. πŸ™‚

I dunno, maybe I should try to get into EVO again, but I just don't have the time to learn about yet another new universe; I'll just learn about it as I work on the EVO Survival Guide. πŸ™‚

    • I think EVO is the best of the three. You can do a whole lot of things on one pilot file, the galaxy has a lot to explore, the ships are brightly coloured and actually make you want to buy them!

Also, comparing to Nova, you don't have to spend most of your time reading and not so much playing! And combat in EVO is far more close-up (as it should be in EV games IMO) - I really can't get interested in the "I-can't-get-close-enough-to-kill-you" fighting in Nova. It seems to me that all the stuff about improved AI really means just that it's pretty hard to get in range.. once you do it's no problem.

Capital ships in EVO were a lot more powerful than the rest - I think that was a lot more realistic than Nova where most ships can be destroyed quite quickly.

And finally for now, the galaxy in EVO is more sensibly designed - if I want to go somewhere I head in that direction - generally without worrying about dead-ends. In Nova, especially Federation space, the design gets incredibly annoying and unnecessary - especially when you don't need to go to most of the places anyway.

Basically, EVO built all of the races' cultures remarkably well in the not-too-long mission strings, planet and bar descriptions, without going overboard. For a galaxy with well defined government boundaries, I'd far prefer to live there than in the Nova world.

    • They all have good qualities to me, I found EVO very exciting in all it's missions and huge galaxy. But EV was a very good HARD game as compared to EVO and EVN.

I always found Override more difficult - being in anything above a Lightning made things easy, but in Override you're vulnerable no matter what you pilot (unless you have the exp. shield generator...). I also thought the Voinian Dreadnought missions were much more challenging than the alien ones.

And...umm...I don't not like Override because it's harder. I only like Override because it's challenging, but I like EV more because of the plot.

      ...honest...

I noticed that you didn't have much done for EVO on your site, I guess that explains why.

Little known fact: for a good year or so I didn't even realize that I was a moderator here, because I never came here. πŸ™‚

Actually, the main reason I haven't done much for EVO on my site is because the information wasn't readily available; all of the information in the EV section was ripped directly from backed-up copies of EV.com that I had sitting around. I do have some raw EVO info sitting around, but I got it when I was beginning work on the EVN Survival Guide (while the game was still in beta) and haven't had a chance to dump it into templates or anything.

I've got MANY things on my plate right now (finish up the EVN Survival Guide, assimilate (at least) two new sections into the Lair, medium revamping of two existing sections, major revamp of another...), the EVO Survival Guide has never been very high on my list; much to shayborg's delight, I'm sure, as I'd crush him like a bug if I got EVO info up there. πŸ˜›

    • While I loved Nova when it came out, I've found that once I've played through the strings it has no replay value. None of the ships particularly excite me and all the missions concentrate on storyline more than combat - this is great the first time, but not after that.

EVO had dodgy graphics, but otherwise it had the best base scenario. I've played all the strings except the Igadzra one through several times, and enjoyed it a lot - there are so many different ships to try, all of which are usable. Nova has so few ships that actually work as all-purpose mission-performing ships, while Override has the Arada, Zidara, Lazira, CW, UE Destroyer, Freight Courier, and Igazra that all work great for me.

The base scenario in EV is fun but is too short and shallow for much replay. However, it has some great expander plugs like EVGE and Galactic Scourge that expand it so much it becomes the best of all three. EVO never got as many good plugins as EV - The Frozen Heart was good, as was Beyond the Crescent, but neither of those have any replay value either.

Hey, there's an idea - dethrone EVula and replace him with me as moderator here :).

    • I would agree with MartiNZ, if only he hadn't left out EV, which, IMO, is the best. πŸ™‚

And I think that the EVO ship graphics look bad because it takes place half a century or more before EV.

Except that the EV Override graphics don't look 'older', just more simplistic in design. Besides, since the two games occupy separate timelines, I don't see how a comparison can be made.
