In terms of techniques, I expect you're flying something faster than those Voinian cruisers and frigates, so try to use that to your advantage. If you can flank them, they sometimes have a hard time tracking you with their turrets. Also, try not to take them on directly if they still have rockets - keep your distance until they run out. If you can, avoid fighting groups of them. Sure, it's inevitable sometimes, but if you can get them spread out and engage them one at a time, you'll be better off.
Lastly, it's pretty likely that your ship will recharge its shields a lot faster than they will regain their armor. If worse comes to worse, get away from them for a while and let your shields power up. It might take a while this way, but when you go back to fighting them your defenses should be considerably higher than theirs.

Actually, Voinians don't recharge their sheilds and armour at all. I took a frigate down with a shuttlecraft with a blaze cannon, because whenever it hit me, I would just run away, only to come back again with 100% sheilds while his wouldn't have budged

You have too much time... just like I did about 3 years ago when I made it my mission to take down the Alien Cruiser in EV with as many ships as possible. If I recall correctly, I managed it with everything except the Bulk Freighter, Exec Transport, and (I think) Light Freighter. Ah, the joys of being 14 and having a whole weekend with nothing to do

Also, don't worry too much about the cruisers. I'm pretty sure they are not part of the mission related dude, just some, um, local scenery. I'm fairly sure I didn't kill them when I did that mission. But you must destroy (not just disable) all of the frigates

My advice is as follows. I beat the entire UE mission string in a UE fighter(when cargo permitted). You load up on rockets and blaze cannons and you take those voinian rocks out one by one getting more rockets from fighters. Piece of cake. Since this mission takes cargo I believe, spring for an Arada and soup it up, it'll do in a pinch.
