Let me start this by saying that I'm not dissing the Mods for just doing their job. Nor am I picking on one particular person.

I came across a post "Um pluggin makers" very recently.

Some of the funniest stuff I have ever read, like:

"With people like you in the world, sometimes I wonder if Darwin was wrong." my personal favourite from Werty

OK. Read the post. Crack up. 'When will the madness end?' you wonder...

Well it already has.

EVula, WHY OH WHY did you lock that thread? Can you explain why and on exactly what grounds threads get locked? Please?

And I'll say it again, I'm not here to diss anyone or flame. I'm just wondering, that's all.

I read that discussion thread a few days ago and thought everyone was being just a little too nit-picky and harsh with ThE BLaZeR. That thread revealed to me just how petty and small some people can be. Although I hold myself to a high standard for spelling and grammar, I do not expect others to be as perfectionistic as I am (nor should I). ThE BLaZeR's posts were understandable despite his style of writing, in fact, at least one of his more anal critics posted a translation key indicating that he also understood ThE BLaZeR's posts. So what is the problem if everyone understands each other? The problem is that several people here are petty and need to get laid. It is NEVER acceptable to disrespect another person unless that other person disrespects others first, and even then you are only stooping to his or her level.

Most of those quotes you have cited are not particularly witty. In fact, they seem to suggest that far too many people in that discussion thread watch sit-coms instead of reading or studying.

Had I been a moderator, I would not only have locked that thread but banned some of its more hostile participants.

If someone posted in French, I would be able to understand it, but it would take some work. It is extremely tedious to read "AOL-Speak", particularly when one is capable of posting in English (which the person in question did, shortly thereafter).

Summary: He asked a question, and failed to get any constructive answers. Instead, he got a handful of insults (there were 29 posts total in that thread). As it is, I should have slapped several people for that, but I'm a nice guy: I didn't slap the poster or the responders, I merely closed the topic. However, if I catch any of them being overly insulting, I will drop karma.

I'm not getting pissed because you responded correctly: you saw something amiss in my moderating, you brought the issue to my attention (in a calm manner), and awaited my response. Actually, I prefer that someone call me on my moderating actions on the board, rather than via email. This allows me to get a good estimation of what the community feels in the situation (ie: a few months back, I prematurely locked a topic. I was called on it, and could quickly see that the rest of the members did indeed feel that it was premature, so I opened it again), and also allows me to answer to everyone, rather than deal with several emails on the same topic (and answers it for the people who wonder, but don't bother emailing).

I don't know why Soviet mikee would prefer to operate by email, when on the boards there is open discussion between all members. I remember EVula saying once a long time ago that issues should be raised on the board, not through email (or as a final resort).

Perhaps this may see the dawning of a new age in moderating? One where people can raise issues, questions, queries without being ambushed by a drop in karma. Granted, I really shouldn't have questioned the thread "Um plug makers", simply because it was a collection of insults towards a newbie (ThE BLaZeR, if you're reading this, I'm sorry). But already this topic has bought up different views on how this establishment is run; from the 'extreme' view of the unregistered SexyStripperBoy to Starkiller's more conservative view.

I'd like to see some replies to this.

Experiences with members flaming moderators left and right on the Banter and Brawl, and the further flame-fests the erupted. It's understandable.

Interesting matter. I'm absolutely certain there is a little conversation between EVula and Soviet right now, which we'd better not get involved in. Different moderators, Dutchie, have different styles. Soviet mikee absolutely despises the public broadcasting of his karmaslapping. A little suspect, perhaps, that he is so against that matter, when in all reality it is an important piece of evidence, if, say, a moderator was abusing his power.

I agree with EVula on this matter, come to think of it. Emails are a nice, clean, way, but they can carry a lot of bias (which EVula might believe I used on him in the past :)) and thus aren't the best way to convey the opinion of the community as a whole. Public discussion has it's downsides, of course. It's an opportunity for excessive flaming, and, as I see it, is a deathtrap when moderators who don't like the idea come along.
