At the start of the game, the spacefaring civilazations are the humans, the Voinians, the Emalgha, the Miranu, the Zidagar, the Azdgari, and the Igadzra. The last three are all one species, the Gadzair, I think. There are also several non-spacefaring civilazations. Aside from the Hinwar (who go into space during the game), however, these civilazations are not important.

Fighters aren't worthwile, I never use them. The Azdgari are only mean to the other two strands.
