    • Question about the Emalgha

Is it just me, or are the Emalgha reminiscent of the Krikket people from THHGTTG? Except of course, that they don't have a dust cloud, or the desire to annhialate the Universe. Maybe there's a connection...

Or not. Anyone who wants to discuss or elaborate, be my guest.

    • Disagree. I don't see where any similarities lie. The Emalgha are the good guys, for a start. They were attacked and enslaved, not the other way around... and they don't have war robots or many other examples of high technology.

The United Earth government's ancestors may well have been from the B-ark, though.

    • They're kind of similar with the idea of the first ship being put together in somebody's back yard, but apart from that, no.

      what's the THHGTTG?

    • Heathen! Why, The HitchHiker's Guide To The Galaxy by the late, lamented Douglas Adams.

    • Maybe I should elaborate. It's just that they both build rickety wooden ships. I guess I wasted topic space.

The Krikkit started with rickety wooden ships, but very quickly moved on to super-powerful military vessels and war robots.

They certainly build ships with wooden hulls, at least according to the target screen. Whether a wooden hull is enough to make the whole ship a wooden ship is open to interpretation.

One would think that if they lacked metals, they would look to high-tech plastics or ceramics or something (even plain rocks!). But hey, colonial and exploration period ships here on earth were made out of wood, so I guess wood is a good staple material.

    • Wood is hard to make airtight. Hell, it's hard to make watertight, even with lots of sealant. Unless they've got sequoia-sized trees on Emalgia that they're hollowing out and making their ships out of, they've got to have something other than wood making up those hulls.

      Yes, I know, it's just a game.

    • Perhaps they have really gigantic trees, or some type of wood that lends itself to being worked. Maybe the wood they have has such a high mineral content that it can be worked like lower grade metal. Maybe they use it only in places where it can be airtight, and have the rest of the framework made out of metal. Maybe it really doesn't matter and we shouldn't get worked up about it. Keep the topic going tho, this is interesting.

If at first you don't succeed, use more duct tape.

    • There is one other possibility. Has anyone else read any Larry Niven? Booster trees!

EV DUDE, if I see you do stupid stuff like that again, I'm dropping your karma. As it is, I really should for this topic, but I'm letting you off easy with a warning. Flaming (which your post would count as in my book) is not only against board policy, but its also annoying to everyone on the board. Stop it.

    • I'm guessing that the Emalgha don't need to breath, or just don't explode in space or something, because wood lets air through. I don't care if it IS made out of a single tree! It would stil depressurize in space! rant, rant, foam at mouth

At least they don't fly kraits. They'd be wiped out for sure then! 🙂

You're assuming Emalghian trees are like Earth trees.
