Starkiller sat down. He was nervous. The Prime Minister seemed friendly enough, but there was something about him that suggested that he knew that he was in power. Not a controller, but that power radiated from him, and he was awe-inspiring.

"I understand you wanted to see me?"

"Huh? Oh, right. Yes. I represent the Huron General Assembly. There is, as you probobly know, an increasing renegade problem to the south. Some of them are, well, rather vicious. The Hatuli system has been particularly hard hit, and now that they have a base to go to... well, we feel like we need some protection. We at least want to be able to have our own militia, assuming the United Earth government is unable to afford us any protection."

"Abandon the ship," the captain of the disabled Voinian cruiser ordered. "We've received too much damage, far beyond repair. But be sure that the prisoner is taken with us, as he is very valuable."

Several guards swiftly saluted and rushed out of the wrecked bridge. Many of the life support mechanisms aboard sections of the cruiser had failed, and casualties were extrememly high. The ship was hard to recognize as a Voinian craft, since the shape of the cruiser has been decimated by heavy firepower.

Once the remaining Voinian warships in the DSN-9418 system has picked up the survivors, they set course for Bakka, where the 17th warfleet division was now based.

    • "Well, the Voinian front is taking up most of our resources, and with Earth in danger, there's not much the Navy can do to help you. However, I think I can spare a few Regiments to send down to Huron to help defend it against the Renegades. As for a local militia, I think that's a fine idea. Kind of reminds me of the National Guard that each state used to have in the old USA. Your request for a militia is granted. May God be with you."

Oh, OF, whoever put a UE pupper government in Iothe Prime will have to take some flak from me. I am opposed to puppet governments - either the UE rules planets as full members of the UE Federation with their consent, or it does not rule them at all.

    • Azdara Ace, for the first time in his life, enjoyed hyperspace travel. He enjoyed the quite, the lack of death, the lack of anyone but himself. He finally realized how big of threat the Vonians posed. What the UE really needed to do was to rush that prototype carrier into production. At the moment, the UE didn't have any ships that could match the awesome firepower and armor of a Vonian Cruiser. During his time during hyperspace, Azdara decide one thing, he never wanted to be in a fighter squadron again. He loved piloting fighters, and would like to continue to pilot fighters for the rest of his life, but didn't want to risk losing so many close friends again. Azdara Ace would go and tell the UE everything he knew, but then he would request to fly alone as a UE officer. If they said no, he would leave.

    • "Answer!" A Voinian Lieutenant exclaimed after striking Aben Zin with rage, "should you not answer our questions, I'm sure you'll find our means of torture far worse than anything you could imagine."

Aben Zin, the captured United Earth pilot who had been brought aboard Skyblade's flagship, was in a daze. Blood poured from his nostrils, where Voinian troops had struck him again and again demanding that he answer their questions. "The Voinians really are tyrants," Zin though to himself.

The Voinian Lieutenant repeated his question. "Do you humans now have space mine devices outfitted on your warships?"

"I know nothing of the space mines, or what my government has to do with them!" Zin said aloud, hoping that would quench the demands of the soldiers.

"That's a lie. So typical of you human creatures," the Lieutenant said, pacing the prison cell. "If your government is good at anything, it is saying something which totally defies the truth."

Aben Zin was now outraged. Though he was in bad shape physically, he mustered up all the energy he had and attacked the Lieutenant, grasping him around the throat. As the Lieutenant began gasping for air, the two Voinian troopers guarding the door drew their neutron pistols and fired off a few bursts. Aben Zin fell to the floor, having been hit in the leg and his arm being shot off.

The Lieutenant got back to his feet. "Take him to sick bay. We'll kill him after we drag every bit of information out of him."

The U.E.S. Absolution was slowly being obliterated. The shields were almost gone, and the armor was deteriorating quickly. The 12 Voinian Fighters were too much for the poor Absolution. As the armor dropped below 30%, A.6000 ordered the ship evacuated. All the crew rushed around, fleeing in the escape pods. All except the XO, who paused to look at the Admiral.
"Sir, c'mon! We have to evacuate!"

"No. I will go down with my ship."

Aben Zin slowly regained conciousness. His head was pounding. He opened his eyes but this absolutly made no difference- all was black. He felt sick and light-headed. Slowly, scrambled thoughts entered his head.
Reminds me of my 18th, he thought, All I need now is a traffic cone and a policemans helmet...
He clutched his head. Gradually recollection crept over him. His last memory was of the vast bulk of a Voinian cruiser looming over him, dwarfing the wrecked UE fighter. His UE fighter. The Changeling.
He felt anger overcome him and tried to surpress it. Violence would do him no good at the moument. Instead he vowed that the Changeling would fly again, and become a byword for terror to all enemies of Humanity. The Changeling would always rise again.

      ===
      Big words, he thought.
But they were'nt going to get him out of this place.
He felt his was around the cramped cell. It was basically a six foot by six foot box. The walls, floor and ceiling were solid steel. In one of the walls he felt rivets and hinges that indicated that that wall contained a door. Apart from that the cell was entirely featureless. No toilet, no light, no bed.
Cosy. Lets hope I won't have to stay here long.
      Suddenly he grinned.
Hey, I'm the first human ever to see the inside of a Voinian ship! Alright so it's not much of a view...

      ===
Suddenly he was moumenterily light burst into a chamber as a small slit hissed open in the base of the door and a plate of what Zin took to be food was pushed in. The cell was temperarily illuminated by the sudden light, but all it revealed was that the cell was an entirely unattractive shade of gunmetal grey. The slit slid shut again and Zin thought he heard a chuckle from his Voinian guards. He was left to eat in complete darkness.
Slowly he groped for the dish. What ever was on the dish the guards had found amusing. This almost certainly meant that he would not find it so comical. Gingerly he scooped up some of the mush with his fingers. His stomach turned as he forced it towards his mouth. Almost retching with trepidation and revultion he let a little dribble into his mouth.
He almost died of shock. It tasted fantastic.
By some quirk of Voinian taste, the food they found almost inedable was akin to the most succulent of sweetmeats of Earth.
Aben Zin scooped the rest up hungrily. The thought struck him that if the Voinian's suddenly decided to make peace they could at least open a damn fine chain of restaurants...

      Sergeant Major ESPilot
      U.E.S. Valkerye
      12th Destroyer Brigade
28 Upgraded Destroyers (extra maneuverability, +5 rockets (+10 on the Valkerye and extra shields))
Patrol Routes: Southern UE Systems, occasionally attacks some Renegade systems

ESPilot stood at the bridge of his Destroyer, the U.E.S. Valkerye and surveyed the DSN-5842 system, totally ridden with asteroids. This was however, a minor set back for the 12th Brigade's agile warships. He announced over the intercomm "Alright 12th, watch those asteroids, and keep an eye out for any renegade Helians or Kraits. They're weak, but when the Kraits come in numbers they're fast and they're loaded with blaze cannons. We'll stay here for about two hours standard earth time and then head to Iothe to refuel and restock on rockets from the last battle." One bye one the captains reported back. The warships just drifted for a while, occasionally avoiding asteroids, when a small warfleet of renegades popped in from hyperspace! "Okay captains, I count at least 13 Kraits, 6 Helians and 2 captured Freight-Couriers. Split up into groups and engage the Kraits first; they'll pose the largest immediate problem. They're no match for rockets and heavy blaze fire, and with them out of the way we should deal with the Freight-Couriers. The Helians will come next, and they'll pose no threat so engage them as you wish. Form up, move out, kick some renegade ass!" The Destroyers swiftly went into groups of 4, and charged into the incoming Kraits, a first row of two firing, the the next row of two, and back and forth supplying continuous rocket fire, pausing only to attack with blaze turrets. The front 3 Kraits were instantly decimated and the next row hurled through space, forcing the rest to scatter avoiding certain death. The rockets were only moderately fast and unguided, but when aimed properly they could intercept a fast-moving krait before it could slow itself down. The Valkerye went right at a cluster of Kraits, it's three turrets blazing and rockets firing, the concussion sending them scattering. Soon the Kraits were defeated, but the Freight Couriers and Helians were now upon the Brigade. The Freight-Couriers had low shields but decent speed and firepower for trading ships. Still they were no match for the powerful UE warships, and went down fast under a thick storm of rockets. Now the 6 Helians had become totally demoralized and were retreating to hyperspace, but the Brigade was on them, firing rockets and blaze cannons. They were quickly destroyed as well. "Good job men! Now let's hed to Iothe. Then we'll resume our patrol back to Ariane." The stars lengthened into bright white lines as the 28 warships of the 12th Brigade made their way into hyperspace.

    • Admiral Vaten, the Emalgha fleet commander, was fairly upset. His shipbuilders had done nothing but crank out inferior freighters and fighters. Sure, the freighters could be upgraded into warships, but it still took about two to destroy one Voinian frigate, which was clearly inefficient.
      -------------------
The Emalgha had sent a commission to the Miranu, begging them for support, or to at least trade technologies. The Miranu had steadfastly refused, not wanting to be involved in the war. In desperation, the Emalgha had built a special scoutship, with range comparable to the Miranu Courier, that was to seek out another race that could help them fight the Voinians.

The scout went past Miranu space, first encountering a race known as the "Zidagar." The scout, of course, had schematics for all known technologies aboard. The scoutship managed to find the homeworld of Zidagar, where the captain was immediately admitted to see the leader. He was, after all, a newly discovered race.

After listening to the Emalghian explain his people's situation, the Zidagar leader took pity on him, and agreed to trade technologies. The Zidagar were interested in both the Voinian rocket, the Emalgha cannon, and the freighter upgrade. In exchange for all three, and the model of the Emalgha scoutship, the Zidagar were willing to give away their coveted Zidagar fighter design. From this schematic, the Zidagar said, you can easily design a powerful gunship or warship.
      --------------------
Well, that was where the Emalgha stood now. The phased beam aboard the fighter was fairly useless, of course, needing the aligned crystals to work, but perhaps they could do something with the basic design...

The shipbuilders of Gurado had begun putting together a powerful warship design. It would feature both emalgha and phase turrets, as well as upgraded engines based on the Zidagar fighters'. All energy was being devoted to building them, so they would come pretty fast...

    • Azdara Ace and his squadron arrived in Sol one by one, totally out of formation. Azdara Ace immediatly headed to Luna, where UE Headquarters were based. Luna was normally used to UE Fighters coming and going very easily. But it appeared that they didn't want any imposters getting through at the moment. "Okay Red Leader, hold your present course and don't defer from it unless you wish to be fired upon. You will be scanned by a UE fighter in a few minutes, and if your ID is valid, you will be allowed to land at Landing Pad 2314."
"Roger that Luna control, there will be some other UE fighters jumping in soon. If they are from Red Squadron, send them to my pad."
"Okay Red Leader, that's standard procedure anyways, I suggest you read the full and unabridged UE Fighter Pilot Manual."
"I have read it, it's just hard to remember things when the book is 20,000 pages long." Azdara Ace really got sick of landing controllers that thought they knew everything.

      ================================================================

Azdara Ace was soon sitting in a smallish conference room being pumped for information from more know-it-all officers. Maybe it was just Azdara Ace, but the quality of UE officers seemed to go down a lot during the past 5 years. Azdara Ace made a little doodle of a Vonian Cruiser exploding in his notebook. "Officer Azdara Ace, please pay attention when I ask you a question, how many Vonian Cruisers were there?"
"I believe that there were three sir. One of them was almost destroyed when we left, but the other two were still relatively undamaged.
"Thank you. Did you happen to notice which Cruiser a UE Fighter was in? The pilot, Aben Zin most likely has valuable information about the enemy, and we want him back."
"No sir, I didn't get a good view at the fighter bays during the battle." Finally, afte 4 straight hours of being asked basically the same thing in different forms, Red Squadron was allowed to get some rest. All of the rest of Red Squadron filed out, but Azdara Ace stayed behind.
"Sir, I request permission to speak with Admiral Johanson." Azdara wanted to speak to this particular admiral, because he was in control of how big fighter squadrons would be, who would fly where, and other related topics. If Azdara Ace wanted to fly solo, he would have to go through Admiral Johanson.
"Okay Azdara Ace, I will arrange a meeting with him, in the meantime get some rest."
      "Thank you sir."

Um ... at this stage of the story, the Emalgha are still under Voinian rule. This story takes place before the EVO game starts, that is right before the Battle of Sol (the big victory as described in the intro text.) You'll have to wait before the Voinian defense fleet is called to Sol for the Battle of Sol ,thus enabling the Emalgha to revolt and take over. • Whistling abstractedly to himself, shayborg walked down the main thoroughfare of the Huron spaceport. He had just sold a newbie merchant a cargo hold full of glitterstim (a type of drug, and the name's stolen from Star Wars -- couldn't think of anything better, sorry) at 300% sticker price, and he had a nice fat credstick weighing down his overalls pocket. Normally, he would have been a lot happier than he seemed now, but his thoughts were elsewhere.

He had been thinking of the developments on the western UE frontier lately. At first, he had just continued his normal routine, though news from the front had the annoying effect of pushing all other important market information into the background. He had considered running medical goods to one side or the other, but after what had happened to the UE supply convoy, he had decided it was risky and thus unprofitable, so he had put it out of his mind. Now, though, he had been thinking ahead for once. (Since many of the UE ships had been sent to the western front, patrols had become fewer, and he had lots of free time as a result.) In the long term, the war's indefinite continuation would be good for him, as UE ships' diversion to the front would make it easier to smuggle goods. But this was an unlikely outcome, as the Voinians seemed to be winning. On the other hand, helping the UE might convince them to overlook him a little during their patrols, and such an advantage would make him a very rich man. But then a new problem arose. Shayborg was a pretty good pilot; he had successfully fought off UE Destroyers before in his trusty heavily modified Helian. Because of this, if he offered his services to the UE, there was a good chance he would be asked to pilot a ship. This would mean increased risk, and the chance that all his potential profits would be nullified. The more he thought about it, the more difficult his dilemma seemed. His brow furrowed in thought, he entered the hangar bay where the Dauntless was docked.

Entering the bay, he almost bumped into an old pal, Starkiller, who had saved his life once back in their smuggling days. They had been fast friends ever since. Starkiller had "graduated" from his smuggling career recently into a more sedentary lifestyle, and shayborg had heard Starkiller had been involved in some hush-hush meeting with the UE big shots on Earth. He seemed to have just returned. Starkiller seemed a little thoughtful as well, but his face suddenly broke into a huge grin on seeing shayborg. "You still as good a pilot and commander as you used to be? I think I might have a job for you ..." Still talking, they moved back into the city.

    • As he staggered along the seemingly endless corridors of the Voinian command ship, each stumble prodded with the end of a neutron rifle, Aben Zin tried to make sense of what was happening. His entire squadren had been decimated. Harris, Karl, Miranda, all of them were dead.
He had no idea where he was or how long he had been held hostage. There was no way of knowing even how long it had been, his time here only interupted by irregular beatings and new the methods of torture the Voinian doctors could dream up. Thankfully the effctiveness of these were marred by the Voinians lack of understanding of human physiology.
      Then there was his arm.
The whole of his left forearm had been severed just below the elbow. The Voinian doctor had applied some sort of balm which had instantly stopped the bleeding but had burned like ice. Now all he could feel below the shoulder was a dull throb.
A vague memory stirred in his head.
"Great." He said aloud, " Now how am I supposed to operate my digital watch?"
For some reason this made him well up with laughter. Tears rose to his eyes and he collapsed laughing uncontrolably.
The Voinian guards glanced at each other nervously. This wasn't suppposed to happen.
"Get up!" Barked one of them gruffly, and fired his neuron rifle at the space a few inches from Zin's head.
He struggled back to his feet and allowed himself to be lead on down the corridor, still grinning to himself as he staggered on...

The fighters followed for a minute, then one of them, the squadron leader, apparentely, opened it's minute cargo bay and accelerated up to him. It dropped down upon the pod and closed the bay's doors. He was inside a Voinian Heavy Fighter. The fighter zipped back to one of those blasted Cruisers and docked. The cargo bay opened, and he thought he was going to fall out (A 10 yard drop) But the pod had been placed on a grav-nullifier plate and he wa sslowly, tediously lowered down. The Voinian soldiers neutron-blasted the door off and dragged him out.

    • To say that Admiral Johanson's quartes were nice, would be a serious understatement. The room Azdara Ace was standing in now was glowing with wealth, gold here, diamonds there, some platinum, silver, emerald, ruby, saphire. Azdara Ace's vocabulary of gems ended about there. He could see, though, that there was at least 21 other gems there. "Ahh, Azdara Ace, so nice to meet you. You have one of the most excellent combat records in the navy. As you already know, I am Admiral Johanson." His voice seemed fairly trustworthy, though it dripped of power.
"Nice to meet you too, sir."
"So, I heard you had a favor to ask of me."
"Yes, I would like to make a request."
      "Please, proceed."
"I request permission to fly alone. I lost five members of my sqadron in my last battle, and I don't want to go through that again. I don't think that I could control myself if that did happen again during a battle. If I fly alone, I will still fly for the UE navy, but I would prefer to not have to take orders from other higher ranking officers. Part of the reason my group was defeated last battle was because a higher ranking but less experienced officer gave some extremely bad orders. I also open to the idea of hijacking a Vonian fighter and infiltrating a Vonian base."
"Hmmm....This is very interesting, but I'm not sure that it is possible. Navy code demands that all fighters fly in a squadron."
"I understand that, sir, but if you do not allow me to fly alone, I will turn in my wings, and leave the navy. I believe that the UE needs all the pilots they can get right now."
"Yes, you are right, but do you realise how much trouble I'll get in if I let you do this? I could lose my job."
"Most likely not, the UE can't pick up new admirals off the street."
"Okay Azdara Ace, I've got another idea. You can join Intellegence as a fighter pilot, because they're not under so many restrictions. I think you'de like this because you will get to fly solo, and your ship will be heavily upgraded. I might even be able to let you choose what you want to when you join Intel. What do you think?"
"It sounds pretty good, but I'd like to take a night to think it over. Thank you for your trouble."
      "No problem."

You would have to be ignorant, derranged, demented, or dead to turn down the oppurtunity to fly an Azdara.

    • Once again, the Freeport Assembly Hall was full of Renegades, Indy Traders, and the sons of the original investors, trying desperately to fit into the rough crowd.

OctoberFost came up to the podium, and started speaking.

"Citizens of Freeport! As you may know, our station and its allies are being threatened by the new government on Iothe, which is sucking up to the UE by threatening to attack us, take us captive, and extradite us to the UE on phony "harboring of piracy" charges! Therefore, I have called this meeting to decide what to do. Recently, Profit Enterprises, a small weapons and shipbuilding company, has relocated to our station, and have a most interesting proposal. That's right, Profit Industries has propsed to use our shipyard facilities to build a new class of warship, unique to us!"

      the crowd gasped and cheered.

"But...Profit Enterprises wants us to pay for the first few prototypes, and we just cannot afford that, so..."

OctoberFost was interuppted by a large renegade getting up form his seat and yelling. "Then lets use Iothe's money to pay for it! Everyone to your ships!"
