I've been on the boards alot but I still don't understand the Karma thing... What does it do and how do you raise it? Sorry that I sound like a total newbie (I'm not), but I can't figure this one out.

From the webboard guidelines:
**
Karma is a measure of a person's standing on the web boards; 0 is neutral, negative is bad,
positive is good. Everyone starts with neutral (0) Karma. Moderators can warn (lower karma) or praise (raise karma) people based on their posts. If your Karma has been affected by a moderator, you will be eMailed the details of why your Karma was affected, and by whom. If Karma becomes too negative (-10 or worse), that person is banned from the web boards until a moderator raises their Karma.

You can find that information, as has already been posted in the FAQ. As well you can check out the Banter and Brawl Board for more "information" regarding karma. And being a newbie isn't a bad thing.

Karma: You do bad, karma dropped.
You do good, karma raised.
it is bad for karma to be lowered, but isn´t if nothing happens to your karma. it is good when karma is raised.

The max is 16, though nobody has gotten there yet. There's even a prize for the first to get there I think. Most people become mods by the time they get to 10.

Actually, I believe the maximum is 15. I've never seen anyone with karma above 9, and people with high karma often turn into moderators.

Well, that's bologna on a stick. Though your assumption would be founded since normally it takes extraordinary things to get positive karma.

Correct. 15 is the maximum. And David, you should have been selected as a moderator long ago...

Hey, how do you change your "member" bit to "superhero" or some other source of minor amusement???
I would also like to formally recuest that my karma be reduced by a few points as a precautionary measure against outbursts and to make me seem a bit more hardened

Those member titles are only made by Andrew, our honoured leader and administrator. And reverse psychology doesn't work on moderators, sadly. Asking for lower karma just results in moderators kindly pointing out that doing that would be breaking the rules.

You can't. The member titles are set by Andrew Welch only, and he does ~not~ change them on request. If you ask him to give you a member title, he'll probably give you something you don't like.

OK Here's my idea: You give me "shadow ninja" instead of member, and i offer my eternal gratitude in return, which is the most valuable thing I can give you over the internet exept my bank details, which i forgot.

I've noticed very few people with negitive karma, what do you have to do hack into the system or something, or just really get a mod mad?

At least, Andrew does not change titles to what you want them changed to on request.

While some moderators are quicker to warn than others, most will take away karma for any serious infraction of the web board rules.
(praise: raise karma, warn: lower karma)

If I'm not mistaken, people with negative karma slowly regain it back until they're back up to neutral. Since this doesn't occur for people with positive karma, it would explain why there are so many more neutral and slightly positive values than negative.

Moderators can change Karma with the Yin-Yang in the bottom right-hand corner of posts.
You will be notified via e-mail if your Karma is changed.
I'm just glad Karma doesn't lower automatically if your topic is locked.

That's because a topic being locked doesn't necessarily mean that the topic starter was at fault. It could be that people have started going off-topic or using it as a platform for flame wars.

I believe that if you have negative karma, it goes up one point for every 25 posts until you reach zero again. Another reason there are very few people with very low karma is that if your karma reaches -10, you are automatically banned from posting to the boards.
