You'll find him less infuriating if for some reason you need to reinstall your OS. The process of formatting your system disk will remove the hidden file that tells EV:O how long you've been playing for. Extreme? You decide. Perhaps Ambrosia will have another Shareware Amnesty some time soon... the last one was very successful.
A bug in OS8 meant that any time I used virtual memory, the machine was likely to crash, and that crash would wipe out the system partition. This was a big, bad scary time for me, until I figured out what was wrong and bought extra ram. (Though the problem is also fixed under OS 8.1) On the plus side, I was often able to reinstall and reuse time-expired software demos.
I'm pleased to have registered EV at last... I estimate that playing the game has cost me about 15 cents per hour. Compare that to the cost of watching a video film, or going to the pictures. In fact, I think I've probably spent five times as much on snacks consumed during EVx games as I have on the software. You could try dropping a dime in a tin each time you sit down to play a game... it's much cheaper than the arcades, and it funds your next purchase.
