I guess i'll throw my two cents in here.
In general, i don't use cannons-i prefer the accuracy on turrets.
However, when push comes to shove, i have tried cannons. In general,
I approve of phase cannons for the reasons listed above, though i think
I might like neutron cannons better if i could get past one piloting
problem.
Whenever i equip cannons, i use a to autopilot, so as to aim. Unfortunately,
my shots lag behind the enemy vessel, since i like to circle when i'm in
fighters. Because of this, i almost never score hits. As such, i use the
swivel phase cannon because of its turret-like properties.
I think that the neutron cannon would be better than the phase cannon without
the piloting problem because the only time i ever use strait cannons is when
i'm fighting voinians. I don't consider swivel phase cannons to be strait
cannons.
