I'm not quite sure that was the idea in the post about iggys being sexist...

It's Hellcat Helian , but now that you mention it, I believe one of the Captains of Freeport is female. (And, of course, Hellcat Helian isn't gender-discriminatory....)

    • I really will like it when Nova comes out.About the thing where your rescuing her... what does that have to do with it.Shes smart. The smartest person can get kidnapped.Besides, girls can save her as well as anyone else.

    • If she's so smart, she shouldn't be getting kidnapped.
And reguardless, it's your job to "save the helpless female"

I, however, don't buy into this whole EVO being sexist thing. it sounds like a load. But, even so, look at the percentage of people who play this game that are male..... I'd say well over 90%.

    • Watch it there Flatty, ole Jude is quick at the strike, as I know...

    • As I said,The smartest person can get kidnapped.Really what the problem is that we don't talk about computer games if they do play.I used to just watch the boards instead of posting.Sometimes we just post a few times and then leave the boards anyway.Until there's a board we get addicted to.

    • Alien -- blah... I'm sure she knows that she's about 20% of the female EVO playing population. 🙂

      Rima -- huh?

Negative, I saw her this afternoon south of Hatuli, it's definitely Helen.

      Ask me what I'm doing.

    • I still think this board singles out certain groups, but now I'm repeating myself. However, I don't feel this is done on purpose. Males make up around eighty percent of the webboard, put I think a considerably larger amount of females play EVO. (Face it, it's a cool game!) StarStrafer, about the Hellcat thing, in the pers resource, "she" is called helen, but in the mission string, it's helian. Some type of error or confusion I guess. Sexism aside, Mikee kind of has a point. The female black widow spider is dominant. Could the strands be the opposite? possibly, they are a different race. Or maybe they are superior technologically, but lack in the ethics and morals department, oppressing their females. Interesting possibility.
Yes, I probably left out two of the most important female characters in EVO. These two also seem to be the only ones that resort to violence. Anna designs ships that end up killing thousands, and then the renagade captain. (I'm not sure which one is female, but I'm sure on is.) They are both human too. The involvement of violent and aggressive human females might add weight to my above therory. (Oppresed Women)
And yes Rima, Now matter how intelligent, someone can always be kidnapped. Also, she is a brilliant ship designer; does that mean she is a capable combatant? probably not.
Moving on to another thing, only slightly related, is Religion. In EVO, there is none present. Would the discovery of worlds and alien species negate christianity? I would say so. Either that, or the bible would be altered again; similar to what happened when explorers found the Americas. Would the Aliens have similar beliefs, are something totally off the deep end. Speculation is much appreciated! 😉

Hmm.....Well, the aliens should have their own religions, and they probly do, but EVO just doesn't take the time to point it out. Oh, BTW, I have a pair of funny planet descreption from EV:

Rupert in the Persephone system: 'Rupert is a small moon home to a group of religious fanatics, followers of the Order of the Holy Mac'

(I can't remember the planet's name): 'The people of this planet have a peculiar religion—they believe that one day a giant turtle will descend from the heavens and deliver them from evil'.

Quite frankly, I found it funny, but I doubt any sort of real religious fanatics would find it so, but I also doubt that there are any on this board.

    • EVO, and other such games, don't use religion as it would narrow the people playing
and perhaps even result in a fine.

Religion is an area where you have to be VERY careful around. Say the UE and
Miranu had just met and it mentioned Miranu religion. To avoid being susceptible
to fines Ambrosia would have to mention EVERY single religion in existance if they
wanted to mention the UE religion.

Also, say the Voinians are marked as Muslims, or Hindus - not exactly but something
similar. Then you've got them clawing down your throat angered by the comparision.

    • Just a few points:
      1. In regards to "newbies," don't you think that even assigning people who are new to the
boards a specific name helps to keep them separate? Even if someone who is new manages to
avoid posting redundant questions, they still aren't going to necessarily enjoy being
called a newbie. It suggests that their experiences with EVO aren't as worthwhile as
other people's. Plus, in my experience, new members of the board are often more helpful
about answering questions than people who have been around longer, since they aren't bored
of the same old questions. So they deserve some respect.
      2. It's possible that there are some sexist elements in EVO, but it doesn't keep females
from playing the game, as I believe there to be quite a few. I've mentioned before that
Martin Turner received requests for a female-lead plug from many females, if I remember
correctly. More importantly, Ambrosia seems to be trying to address this with EVN, so
let's focus on the future rather than the fact that they might have done something sexist
in the past. Plus, it's not really the place of the males who post here to be offended
for the females. If they are offended by something, they'll let us know.
      3. Religion is a very touchy issue, and neither this board nor the game is the right forum
for it. It's possible that Ambrosia could get away with including religios references in
the EV series, but that it has made more sense to leave it unsaid and let players decide
what they think is the place of religion in that world. There are other things which the
games don't get into, like how most of the technology really works. The focus is on
making an enjoyable game without including things that aren't really pertinent.

These are just my two cents on this. Igor, please edit your post to correct the page
margins, they make it a pain to read (I think it's your clicks that caused this).
      Thanks.

    • Yes, those margins were horrible!

But then again, I always stop writing at a certain point to make it easier for
people to read, so I suggest everyone else does that.

You'll notice that on the writing screen I'm now looking at you can scroll to the
right and right more. Well I don't. I trim it off at the end of the visible line,
to make it easier for people to read.

Paradigm: I would actually like it if EVN included more actual science. It would
allow for you to work things out by comparing it to real physics, which would
      make it interesting.

For example, what's this about phase weapons being terrible against armour? Vice
versa, my dear friend. The "laser" at such high power would burn through armour
with ease. It would be "matter" objects that struggled all round.
