2 inch...Let's see. That would be a 50mm gun. The Russians were able to make a few very successful anti-tanks weapons that were 2 inchers, and could nock out a Tiger at close range. However, the shells fired by these were twice as fast as your normal tank shell, and were armor piercing.

Now the Americans built a 240mm howitzer. (Yeah...VERY big!) That's around a 10 inch gun, which would be your typical gun mounted on a heavy cruiser. These were extremely sluggish to transport, but there wasn't anything it couldn't nock out. They were mainly used for bombarding fortified positions, (Like Fort Schmerson) and they did a very good job. 🙂

Ever heard of the "Gustav" railgun, by the way?

    • No, I haven't heard of the Gustav Railgun. What is a Railgun anyway?

Now, how about a heavy tank with 2 inch sloping armor on all the hull and everything else, 3 inch thick armor in the turret, and an 8 inch gun for the turret weapon. How about THAT tank?

Or, even better, how about a 15 inch gun? Guns of that size were put on Iowa Class Battleships, like the U.S.S. Iowa, U.S.S. Missouri, and the other two sister ships.

As far as the "Gustav Railgun" is concerned, it was gun weighing about that of a destroyer mounted on a railroad. It was the biggest weapon ever made, (designed by the Germans) and had a forty inch gun (Over three feet in height). It required a crew of 2,000 to operate, and in 1942, the Germans were able to destroy an entire city in northern Russia in eight shots. The Russians also had ammunition dumps hidden just off the coast of the city underneath the water, and the Gustav destroyed them in two shots. The shells went into the water, and they were so big that the explosians caused the ground to collapse. Anyway, it was a BIG gun. 🙂 If any of you have every played the "Medal of Honor" game, (which is also one of my favorite soundtracks) there is a level called "Taking out the Railgun," which features a mission where Lieutenant Patterson, (the star of the game) is on a mission to destroy it.

Now this rediculous tank you were talking about. 😄 The armor you announced sounded pretty good, and if it were sloped, it would be a nightmare to destroy, primarily being vulnerable only by air attack. (Like most tanks) An 8 inch gun could never be mounted on a tank, but if it could, it would easilly take out a Tiger.

The Iowa was a World War I ship, which is really why it was used to bombard the shores of Normandy during the invasion, since regular wartime service might have been a stressful job for it. 15 inch guns were no longer fitted on then-modern ships. Battleships built in World War II sported 16 inch guns. Some ships, like the Japanese "Yamato," (The biggest ship ever built) carried 18 inch guns. It never got to use them, though, because it was sunk by U.S. Daugntlesses before it could engage in any battle. By the way, the Missouri carried 16 inch guns.

Anyway, this WWII conversation is pretty fun. History is my friend. 🙂

    • Actually, the U.S.S. Iowa, the U.S.S. Missouri, the U.S.S. New Jersey, and the U.S.S. Wyoming (was it that? I don't remember the names), all ships of the Iowa Class were all WWII ships, not WWI ships. Each of them sported 16 inch guns (I forgot the exact size, but now I remember), and they were all great ships! The Missouri even fought in Desert Storm.

Yeap, sounds right. The Missouri's service in Desert Storm was interesting...It's 16 inch gun turrets were altered to fire Tomahawk cruise missiles from special launchers. Also, I am pretty positive that the Iowa was a World War I vessel, which was why is was used to bombard the beaches of Normandy. The American Navy couldn't afford to bring any of their newer battleships to the invasion shores, so older vessels, yet armed with big guns, were used.

    • I believe you mean U.S.S. Wisconsin?

As for close combat, come in with flamethrower guys and lots of infantrey (sp) use the inf to come around front and use the flame thrower to come in behind and burn them, always protect your Flame boys with stuff like Recons and so on, I hate artellery, how do you move it? Also, if you get the chance try using Bazookas to knock out groups of enemy inf.

You sure? I'm positive the Iowa is only a WWII vessel, not a WWI vessel. BTW, the Missouri's big 16 inch guns stayed the same even during Desert Storm, during which they were used for heavy bombarding. However, Tomahawk Cruise Missile launchers WERE fitted on the Missouri, but none of the big 16 inch guns were modified. However, some of the smaller ones were.

P.S. Look at my new status.

Yeah, guess so. I don't know anything about modern warfare compared to WWII. As for the Iowa, I'm pretty sure it was a World War I vessel, though I'll look it up again sometime soon and verify that.

    • I have a book about the Missouri, and it says that it was built during WWII. In WWI, I don't think they had guns that were 16 inches.

Yeap, you're right. I got mixed up between the Mississipi and Missouri. All battleships (minus a few Axis ships) I know of in World War II were built with 16inch guns or bigger. Sorry for the mix-up, guys!

**(coming in on this thread a little late) In EV3, AI ships are much more tolerant about friendly fire - they will tend to ignore shots from the player that accidentally hit them. However, for those thinking they'll be able to use this to attack non-targeted enemy ships without retribution, you should know that a large number of hits will be responded to in kind...;) Well I was wandering, how is the AI going to define what shots were accidently shot at them between the ones that were purposely fired upon them? Will the AI be smart enough to know if he was targeted when a stray shot hit him?

Ok, this may seem way off topic, but I just have to know why this use of "their" seems so amazing. Using "there" and 'their" is something one learns in elementary school, and the way you people (those amazed by the existance of "their") write, it doesn't seem like you're in elementary school, it seems like you people are at least in 8th grade or up. So . . . what gives?

Oh, and about Firefights, I use guided weapons and let my friendlies do the bulk of the work. I stay out of the hottest areas, and mop up any enemies that come for me (like Voinian fighters and Frigates) and those that I can engage safely (like one Voinian Frigate after I've cleared the surrounding fighters). If I have to get involved (like in the destroy the Dreadnought mission when my escorts eventually run off leaving me with the Dreadought to face alone), I make sure I'm in the position to get away QUICKLY, like I make sure I have an afterburner to burn my arse out of there if the Dreadnought starts getting lucky with neutron cannons/turrets, and rockets. Or, if theres a swarm of fighters chasing you AND there's a nasty capital ship like a Dreadnoght attacking you to, use the fighters as a screen, b/c the big Capital ship will stil try and destroy you even if its own fighters get in the way. As I explained to Skyblade in another thread, I did this alot in an old EV plug called Star Wars: Special Edition (no this is NOT SW2! This plug is older and done by someone else).
