Well, my little bout with the Nadir didn't turn out to be much to talk about. Just some circling to get him to waste his obscene number of needle missiles, and then repeated passes with my 5 phase cannons made pretty short work of him. I picked up Anna Balashova and was off to Knox. When I got there, however, I picked up on the needle jammer string where I'd left off. I got the jammer, and then it was off to Ariane to kick some more renegade booty.
Jumping into the Ariane system, I knew the first thing I'd be dealt would be the krait swarm launched from the turncoats. Sure enough, they were after me immediately. Once they had all been launched, I used a technique I like to call "krait corralling." I flew a tight loop around the line and swung back to my original course. This causes all the kraits to end up grouped into one dense pack, so that I can make passes through and be sure to hit something, rather than a long line, which I would have traverse to the end while taking fire along the entire length.
Anyway, with the pack bearing down (these guys all have afterburners), I targeted one and made my first run, passing stright through the center of the pack with a constant battery of phase fire. My crescent fighter is so fast that it can get through before the kraits even have a chance to open fire, and with each pass I only took minor shield damage. After a few passes, I had inflicted significant damage on quite a few ships. Now they would start to go down. When necessary, I corralled them again to regroup them, and I continued to make passes stright through the swarm, taking down an average of two kraits on each pass. When I reduced their numbers to three or four, I backed off for a second to charge my shields. Then I targeted one and just held down autopilot, so that my target and I swung around back and forth like I've seen aradas do so many times. We kept missing each other, but my secret was that I wasn't really trying to kill the ship I had targeted, but instead to catch the others in the crossfire. One was downed in the crossfire before I took out my target, then I finished off the last one or two with no problem.
Phase 2: Turncoats and helians
With the kraits disposed of, I reversed course and headed back toward the system center. It wasn't long before my sensors picked up a lone helian headed my way. I heard him start to fire off needle missiles, but I continued right at him, with my jammer shoving the missiles out of the way. I resumed the tactic I had used against the kraits, but with slight variations. Not letting go of my fire key the whole time, I held down autopilot to fly straight through him. When at full speed, I let go of the thrust key so that when I passed him, I would turn around to get some more hits in, but continue flying away until I could fly straight at him again, without having to make a turning arc. This also gave my shields an extra couple seconds to recharge after each pass. Like the kraits, the helian didn't open fire until I was right on top of him, and I disabled him with almost full shields.
After destroying this one, I picked up three more helians. I targeted one and megan this tactic again. Because I took so little damage, it was just as effective against multiple ships (I've even taken out two turncoats with it). While I was still working on the first of the three, I detected three UE destroyers coming in. I figured, since my maneuver kept the helians in roughly the same place, I could use it to hold them there until the destroyers could arrive. As it turns out, I managed to diable all three before the destroyers even got there!
As I finished off the last helian, I noticed two turncoats had caught up with the destroyers. Don't ask me why the destroyers didn't kill them before coming after the helians, maybe the turncoats warped in later. In any case, three UE destroyers against two turncoats is a severely lopsided battle, and I just sat tight and watched for the five seconds or so it took before the turncoats went up in smoke. The battle was over, and thanks to my United Earth friends, I hadn't had to fight anything bigger than a helian!
