Well, a lot of things in the Universe are somewhat flat. Out galaxy is MOSTLY flatlike..The only way I could desribe a 3D model of our galaxy is like taking our Earth and pulling it in all directions at the equator until the Earth is 2 or 3 times wider. Even our solar system is "flat". If the planets rotated about the Sun on an X-Y plane, then there is very little change in movement on the z-axis.
