When you buy a ship, look at what it says about it in the shipyard. The tonnage of the ship affects the number of days that go by while a ship is in hyperspace. Basically, the smaller a ship is, the faster it goes. For some of the missions a very small ship will be required. Someone else will have to tell you the exact details; I can't play EV:O while at work. I seem to remember that a ship mass of <=100 tons is one of the breakpoints.
Folks around here refer to ships as 'one day jump ships', 'two day jump ships' etc. A good rule of thumb is that if you have the radar upgrade that changes blip sizes to correspond with the mass of each ship, a one-day jump ship has the smallest blip - a single pixel, a two-day jump ship is shown by a 2x2 block of pixels, etc.
In addition to changing for a smaller ship, you may need to cut down transit times by choosing a route with the smallest possible number of jumps, and carrying enough fuel that you don't need to land while en-route. Landing and taking off again costs precious time - try to use a fuel scoop, or board enemies and take their fuel, or deliberately run out of fuel in flight and buy some by requesting assistance from passing ships. Any of these options is faster than landing and refuelling.
Good luck! See you around the galaxy, captain...

Wow, I didn't know all that about the amount of days that pass by. The size of your ship really matters? I was wandering why sometimes on EVO why my mission time ran out just before I reached my destination. It all makes sense now. Thanks for bringing that up!
