(B)You will not be able to complete any of the main sequence missions in a Falcon. It's too heavy.
Just a little, little while, and you will have a ship that can knock the stuffing out of a Falcon, or, dare I say it, take on a Rigellian Hunter-Killer.
Thanks Martin for the advice. I never thought about the possibility of another ship. The faster, lighter ones seemed so wimpy in terms of armor and space for weaponry...but I'll take your advice, go back to a lighter ship and see what Santa (or the EVO equivalent) brings me in terms of a better ship.
As far as using Res-Edit, I thought I would have to play the game for hundreds of hours doing boring missions before I could afford a good ship like the Falcon, so this seemed like a way of cutting out all those hours of unexciting trading. Now I see the other possibility, that a better ship might be provided as a reward for some missions and that I don't need 10s of millions of credits...I'll reset FH with Res_edit, buy a Buccaneer and try and fulfil the missions without getting killed.
Still seems hard to me to imagine doing some of those fighter pilot training missions in a Buccaneer...too little armor even with both shield upgrades and Balearic coating...but if that's the only ship (or one equally small with equally little armor/shields) that can do these missions in the time given..I guess that's the only solution. So far, trying those missions in a small ship, I can't really help the pilots accompanying me...and either they, or I get killed. I thought the only solution was a better ship, but perhaps I need to learn some better combat skills.
Thanks for your input Martin - FH is an intriguing game and I like the character development that has gone into such personalities as Lindi Van Roth - makes the game so much more than a shoot-em-up.
Onward, back to battle, with those weak shields/armor and a lot of prayer...
