    • New 2D eye candy?? What???

Well, after I started getting bored doing 3D renderings for Quantumire SE (damn you, sprites! look good the first time, I say!), I started doing some 2D drawings of characters in QSE with Photoshop. (Much better then the crude sketches in the "Story" section, mind you!) After tossing the idea of use in the startup screen, we decided to use them in the manual. Now, the part that actually has somthing to do with you guys right NOW. I've also put together a couple desktop pictures of different races, I plan to eventually have one for each of them. Right now I've got one for the Feds and the Outcasts done. Check em out (url="http://"http://www.meowx.com/quantumire/qdc.html")here(/url). Mind you, they only come in the standard Mr. 640x480 size; it ain't point click and render a new size in a few minutes with these things... Let me know what you think!

    • Eh, interesting... Here are my comments.

      1. Interesting physiology. The fed guy seems to have fists larger than his head, and the outcast, well, just seems disproportioned.

      2. I do hope those were sketched with a mouse, or with a graphics tablet that one hasn't grown used to yet. They just seemed a little rough to me.

      3. The shading was sort of abstract. A few highlights, and otherwise just some smooth, non-object-specific blobs (especially the outcast's hair). I personally like the anime cel style shading, and to prove you don't need anything but a mouse and a mind (and PShops's paths tools), here's some line art I shaded (I didn't draw the lines, I simply colored and shaded it): (url="http://"http://www.jps.net/btaenzer/dilandauc.gif")http://www.jps.net/b...r/dilandauc.gif(/url) Yeah, it took me 2 days, but I think the end result was definately worth it.

Otherwise, the poses and concepts were well thought-out and effectively dramatic. Though for a few moments I couldn't figure out where the outcast's right leg went...

Heh, just my style of drawing, I guess...

Yah, a mouse it is. I have a graphics tablet and would have much prefered to use it, but it's ABD and even though I have a converter for my G4, the pointer jumps all over the screen, rendering it pretty much useless.

Once again, I guess this is kind of my unique shading meathod... I use the lasso to select parts, then fill them in with a grapdient (on a separate layer - it's very funny looking when you turn the outline layer off!)... I like the look it gives them, others prefer more traditional styles. Nice work on the picture!

They're pretty good, if not original. The Outcast is actually a different version of Rogue from an X-Men cover a long time ago, back when Joe Madureira was the artist... Though I noticed you did change the colors/shading considerably after re-drawing it which makes it look cool...

Yah, I really liked that picture and thought the pose was just perfect for the Outcast; so I re-drew it to my liking.

    • Cool yo...nice job...

Anime style is more my thing. This looks comic book to me, which is also very cool. Like Weepul said, rough, but it still looks pretty cool. I like doing my drawings via Illustartor, but the only copy I have access to is the school's. thinks for a sec

Hmm...maybe I'll ask jann to display her anime art, which IMO is pretty professional...

I started experimenting with 2d art a while back, and here's one of my recent self animes... (url="http://"http://www.geocities.com/beezuz26/picts-stuff/self_anime.jpg")www.geocities.com/beezuz26/picts-stuff/self_anime.jpg(/url) (photoshop made it look kinda green)

Hmm...and you're an anime fan!? If you are, you should know anime is the original over exaggeration of characters...big heads, small bodies...huge feet/hands, etc...=)

      PEACE YO!

Thanks! Yah, I like to draw comic-book style a lot more than anime. Saw the pic on your desktop in that B&B; post, pretty nice! And DAMN YOU old ABD graphics tablet! Why do you keep jumping around the screen!! Ah well, I guess it's time I got a new one...

Before I critique, I have to commend you for drawing that freehand with the mouse...that's NOT easy.

Oh, that thing on the front of it's head looks like a rose to me... How does a Tarkyl see??

Probably my main criticism is that the coloring isn't contained within the lines. I too work with each color as it's own layer...that's technically cel-style, with line art overlaid over color. (I can't get it out of my head how funny it seems that real-life cels are made on transparencies) Anyway, what I had done after my coloring/shading is I went back with the eraser and made everything nice and confined.

The shading was a little better IMHO, but could be smoother. If you want to do soft-shading style, you've got to blend edges of shadows etc. a lot. Also, the shading still seems a bit ambiguous: folds, ridges, lumps, and the like should all be shaded. Notable problem areas on the Tarkyl are the folds in the ?shawl? (thing wrapped around it's neck), the folds in the shirt under the armor near the waist, and the red bands on the wrist guard.

I'd like trying to shade one of your drawings, but I don't think I've got the time right now. Like I said, that smallish image I colored (original was 2x final size) took 2 days.

Quick tip: work in 200% or 400% of the final size. That lets you put in smaller details more easily, smooths rough edges and allows you to draw with what ends up as a smoother line, and allows way more precision.

You mean a self-portrait? Not bad, though I'm not too big a fan of soft-shading unless it's done REALLY well. (dreamshadow.net is really good)

A way to keep Photoshop from tinting color is to go to the RGB color settings and uncheck Use Monitor Compensation, I believe. It works for me...
