I am not that far into the game. I need better weapons to kill some of these bigger ships like a Volinian Frigate or Cruiser or what have you.
I can't seem to actually destroy any of these with just my phase turets. I can use rockets, I know, but those don't seem to cut it either, and I am
really bad at using those. Is there anything better than phase weapons for killing Volinian ships? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Emalgha weapons. Go to the world of Emalgha and buy some (no missions needed). Emalgha is to the galactic north of the Voinian Empire, and a few jumps SW of the Miranu.

Basically, get a longer ranged weapon and faster ship than your victim and snipe away at it while out of its range. This is usually accomplished by matching speed with them while they try to chase you down. More skilled pilots are able to do this circling the target, which is only slightly more fun than the first method.

These are all the turrets/cannons you can get:
Blaze weapons: average in nearly every way--available all UE outfit shops
Neutron weapons: very powerful, but slow rate of fire--available at all Voinian outfit shops (but, of course, if you want to destroy (url="http://"http://www.geocities.com/evosite/shipyard.html#vcruiser")Voinian Cruisers(/url), you probably can't go to those planets) and Paaren station, after the completion of (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/webboard/Forum8/HTML/001824.html")certain missions(/url)
Phase weapons: pretty fast and strong against shields but very weak against armor--available all Crescent outfit shops
Emalgha weapons: slow, inaccurate, only forward-firing, and weak against shields, but very powerful against armor...if you want to destroy (url="http://"http://www.geocities.com/evosite/shipyard.html#voinian")Voinians(/url), though, this is your best bet, since they've got strong armor and are so slow that they're easy targets for even these weapons

Everyone spells "Voinian" wrong, and all in unique ways. Get used to it. And anyway, the Strand names get butchered a lot, too...if we didn't respond to anyone who spells a race's name wrong, we wouldn't be responding to much.

Well here is a good strategy for killing voinian cruisers, but tnfortunately it doesn't work against lone frigates (only frigates with cruiser escorts :rolleyes :).
First of all, you need at least one rocket launcher (no problem if you have the space: these things are dirt cheap).
Now go away from the cruiser (again no problem: a voinian cruiser is a snail) and wait for the fighters. Disable them, but do not kill any of them (you need at least one left for this to work) and board them and take their rockets. Do not capture them! Fire the rockets from a distance (not too far away or you might miss the bastad) and make the cruiser come on the disabled fighters. The cruiser reawakens the fighters (they get new rockets) so you can begin all over again. With some skill, patiance and practice you will be able to kill voinian cruisers without getting a scratch! Nifty, eh?
